I’m so happy to be here today to share with you a little about myself and my writing. Thanks so much to E.H. for extending an invitation to all of us new authors in the business.
Before the desire to write came that love of reading for me. I could spend hours upon hours losing myself in the pages of a great story. Whether a knight in shining armor or a vampire I wanted to sink my teeth into, I couldn’t get enough of the alpha male hero.
I didn’t even start reading for enjoyment until I was nineteen years old. Of course I had a lot of catching up to do. I think I read on average five books a week. The more I read the more I found myself daydreaming and conjuring up characters. Sometimes a funny scene would develop in my head and I would write it down in a spiral notebook. It didn’t take long before conflict scenes started popping up as well until one day I looked down and I had the beginnings of a story.
Now I will admit, LOL, that I wrote that first story in spirals by hand. It was a historical romance that one of these days I will go through and clean up, but for now the only person to have ever read it was my sister.
One night I just told my husband that I wanted to try to write a paranormal romance. And just like that Secrets of Night came to me. So I grabbed a spiral (I still use them, LOL) and started writing an outline. The way this novella came together astounded me. Before, I had always had trouble trying to figure out how to get from this scene to that scene. But this time it had been so different. My characters took charge and the words flowed as my fingers moved over the keys. The further I got into the story I realized that the plot had grown in size to encompass a series. Also, I had created a secondary character that then in a way started saying, “Where’s my story? What happened to me?” Thus a series was born.
When it came time to submit it, I sat in front of the computer, finger hovering over the mouse. All I had to do was click on the send button, but I was terrified. What if they didn’t like it? As an author your story becomes your baby in a way. You put all this hard work into it and it becomes a tangible thing. As soon as I clicked the send button I felt like an expectant father. Lots of pacing and checking the email ten times a day. And of course when that reply in the big bold black letters happened to be sitting there, I didn’t want to open it LOL. But after I called my mom I did and wow talk about mixed emotions.
And that’s when the real work began. Edits, cover art, promo, final line edits, and finally the coveted release date. You don’t think you can soar any higher on cloud nine. Then you find that first review. I was back to not knowing if I wanted to read it. When I read what Happily Ever After Reviews had to say I was jumping up and down.
So when someone asks me what it has been like to go through all of this it makes me think of a rollercoaster. As you write your story it’s like the first big climb. You’re excited and you anticipate the fall. And when you send it off and take that plunge, your belly tingles and sometimes you just might feel sick but then you hear back and hopefully you are riding back up the next hill. There are constant ups and downs. But it is one hell of a ride.
I hope that you will want to check out my first novella Secrets of Night the first book in the Order of Night series. I also have a romantic suspense novella due out in December. Currently I am hard at work on the second book in the Order of Night series titled Deceptions of Night. You will meet the main character in Secrets of Night. His name is Lex, and boy is he naughty.
