Weekly Geeks – Aaaaahhh, Those Covers

This week the Weekly Geekers are asked to talk about covers or post covers…

Becky asked

I thought it would be fun to look at book covers. I'll give you several topic ideas--and you can choose which you'd like to do.

Compare/contrast international covers. Which do you like best?

Compare/contrast covers in a series. Does it drive you crazy when the cover concept changes over time as a series is published?

Compare/contrast cover changes between hardcover/paperback. Which do you like best?

Compile a top ten (or top five) list for the UGLIEST covers...

Compile a top ten (or top five) list for the PRETTIEST covers...

Compile a look alike post. Have you noticed a new or not-so-new trend? Like flowers on the cover?

Does one of your favorite books have an unfortunate cover? Write a post on why we should read it anyway! Or if you're feeling creative, 'create' a better cover for it!

My Thoughts..

1:) Compare/contrast international covers. Which do you like best?

I read Juliet Marillier’s latest work last year and it was a thrill – Here are the three covers available for the book. I have the UK covered book and I think it is really the best one and one that most reflect the mood of the book and the one that actually give a pretty decent description of Catherine – the heroine of the book.

                (AUS)                              (USA)                                       (UK)

2;)Compare/contrast covers in a series. Does it drive you crazy when the cover concept changes over time as a series is published?

Robin  Owens  - Celta Series

I am a huge fan, massive fan to be honest of Robin Owens, Celta series… A new release comes out in a few month… Look below at the new cover..

   Now Upcoming release – Do you know how MAD I am.  Royally Pissed

3:) Compare/contrast cover changes between hardcover/paperback. Which do you like best?

Jaclyn Dolamore – Magic Under Glass, I love the hardcover pic

                         Paperback                                              Hardcover

M.J. Pearson –Discount Young Gentlemen – Ebook cover all the way

                             Paperback                                      Ebook

4:)Compile a top ten (or top five) list for the UGLIEST covers...

Gonna pass this one…. there are enough ugly covers out there without me finding them for you…

5:) Compile a top ten (or top five) list for the PRETTIEST covers that CALLED to me...

6:)Compile a look alike post. Have you noticed a new or not-so-new trend? Like flowers on the cover?

Can I just say the Twilight-tised covers that are everywhere…… need I say anything else…

7:)Does one of your favorite books have an unfortunate cover? Write a post on why we should read it anyway! Or if you're feeling creative, 'create' a better cover for it!

Gonna pass on this one as well…

??

Anything thoughts from you guys… Paperback V Hardcover..

Any cover in a series spoiled your fun lately….

Or, What do you think of my choices…

I noticed that you're a fan of swords, knives, and throwing stars on covers. :)

Very much so - the bigger the better...

I rarely read paperbacks anymore so while I'll look at a cover when I first buy it and add it to my Reader that's about it. I don't see it again and don't really think about it one way or another.

Although I did really like the Fugly cover. :)

wow, I like the new header on the blog. XD

As for covers, I'd have to agree with you. Although for Heart's Blood, I like the US cover. *shrugs* But I also think It's all according to one's personal taste as well.

I do find it interesting as well how the cover changes for a series or when they reprint over time, like in Patricia Briggs Hurog series.

But I've also discovered recently how much more I like the UK's covers more like in the Night Huntress series and Kitty Norville series...

Paperback v. Hardcover covers?? I luv the Mercy covers because they're the same from HC to PRBK. =) As for others, I could flip a coing. *grins*

I agree 100% on the cover for Heart Journey. Won't stop me from reading the book, but I'm actually going to have to use a book cover for the first time in years, just so I don't have to see the cover. Not only did they change the style, but the guy just doesn't seem realistic for some reason.

Hi!

Regarding series covers. I was once told that cover concepts are changed in a series every 4-5 books to be more fresh and keep readers engaged.

I note you have the reissue cover for HeartMate, if you want the original to post, let me know. That particular cover, since HeartMate was originally a "Magical Love" book, and had to have the "magical" element front and center, has T'Ash wearing a glowing heart necklace.

My favs of the series are Heart Duel and Heart Change, LOVE Heart Change.

As for Heart Journey, a lot of people liked it, but for me it was more of a wince.

I have submitted the cover concept for Heart Search (out next year) and have heard that it appears it will feature a guy with two pistols (which I sent).

I was also told that they are going with a new artist!

Naturally I have stories about every single cover...but this post is long enough.

Thanks so much for talking about my work.

Merry meet and merry part and merry meet again.

@Lily..

I am still so passionate about my fantasy stuff - I still buy them in papaper/harcover...

So covers really makes it for me...

Fudly is really something different... I do hope this is a first step into an age of covers with a bit more edge to them...

:)

@Redd

I do tend to change my banner alot - Thank you...
Shaking the blog up sometimes is nice..

Definately it is a personal taste on how much one loves a cover - beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and all that....

I am agreeing with you on the UK cover thing - I find outside of Urban Fantasy the UK covers ROCKS!.

Have a look at the Maria V. Synder set of UK covers...sweet.

I like the same cover for all format of the book - makes life easier.. I have been known to buy books if the cover change...

:)

@Beth..

Good Morning to you...

I know what you mean about reading Heart's Journey - I am so anxious for the release...

I remember when I first saw it - I actually thought it was a mistake as you said the gut isn't even realistic...

..but the main thing is what's inside those covers and that's what I want....

LOL

@Robin...

Merry meet Robin and welcome...

I was once told that cover concepts are changed in a series every 4-5 books to be more fresh and keep readers engaged.

This I can understand and realistically cover artist wont please averyone, but after eight books who would have thought they would change the concept...

I realyl feel let down - but, it is what it is.... My neatly compiled set with have an odd cover joining them... LOL

Heart's Change is fresher in my mind but Heart Duel is my fav.. LOVED IT..

I came to the series about your fourth or fifth book in - so I had the opportunity to not get the original cover which I did not like by the way... but all keeper shelf stuff...

As for Heart Journey, a lot of people liked it, but for me it was more of a wince.

Aaaahhh dont say that - now you really make me what to read it...

I'll brace myself for the other covers to come - I'' keep in mind that it's the quality of the work and not the cover....

Merry meet and merry part and merry meet again..

Peace be with you and yours...

I do love the Aus marillier cover but that it's cos it's Waterhouse, but her dress is wrong for the time period it should be in. So guess the Uk one the best one there

The Marilier Book Covers are Great. I have the third one and I think that describes the Heroine best!

@Blodeuedd

I kept looking at the Waterhouse image and it took me a while to figure out why that pic was used and it was the name of the piece..

The Crystal ball... there is a orb of sorts in the book...

But it is not a reflection of the book as all...

That cover of Heart Journey is, um, different. I wonder why they do that. At least they kept the fonts the same, something to be grateful for.

Tam on 10 August 2010 at 19:23 said...

Hmm. Chris seems to have found your violent achilles heel. LOL

Much as badger in his pants boy from Discrete Young Gentlemen makes me giggle, I prefer it to the generic, not so historical looking cover.

Erotic Horizon on 10 August 2010 at 21:41 said...

@Rikki..

That last cover is a bit of a shocker - pity they couldn't get the model to look more realistic...
