"Change the World 9 to 5" is the latest book from the team that brought you the best selling "Change the World for a Fiver". "Change the World 9 to 5" features 50 simple, practical things which we can all do during the working day to make a difference to the world and those around us, regardless of our profession. And like "Change the World for a Fiver", it will be packed with tricks, gimmicks and even the odd surprise. With the longest working hours in Europe, "Change the World 9 to 5" will help us all make the most of the time we spend at work and feel good about ourselves.

My thoughts.

Every now and then I find myself picking up one of these books that don't take alot of concentration to get through but in the big scheme of things pack a mighty punch…

A few years ago I read a book called Change the World For a Fiver – which I enjoyed immensely.. CHANGE THE WORLD 9 TO 5 is the follow up book and I also enjoyed this offering from Short Books. So much so that I have decided to tell you guys about it.

The book itself is simply in it’s design, it is really one of those books that will either catch yours eyes or just not register at all on your book buying radar. It didn’t register for me at first, it was only when I opened the book and realised that I had read the first book and liked it that sealed the deal so I popped it into my shopping basket..

This is  a feast of visuals and short quotes. The draw on each page is really the detailed visuals which I was really impressed with - I could see the people behind this really put some thought into the message they were trying to convey alongside the quotes that they have on the top left hand corner of each page of the book…

Each page has a suggestion to make either your working life easier or your days outside of the home better, healthier and stress free.. there are 50 suggestions here and they range from stuff like manners, courtesy, issues of judgement, exercise and even diet….

I thought it was all tastefully done with some really simply things that can be achieved, without even too much change to your day really… I ‘ll just highlight a few that I really liked…

Take breaks

Sometimes the demands of the job are such that taking a break is not really an option and even when you do – your brain is still on work mode… I am carting around my crossword puzzle book with me now and I have one of those electronic Sudoku thingy in my bag all the time as well – and of course I have the trusty paperback..

Practice mobile Manners

I like this one because more and more I see adults and kids alike talking on their mobile at the most inappropriate time. I love phone tech – don't get me wrong, but there really is a time and a place for this…

I wish people would remember that the world turned before the invention of the mobile… this is really one of my pet peeves…

Give Up Some Spare Time

This one is something I believe passionately in.. I have always volunteer in my community. Currently I am do one day in a charity shop and I spend time with the girls.. The girls however have become a labour of love as I have been with them so long, they now feel like family..

But really even if it’s only two hours you have to spare – it can make a difference to somebody… Can you spare anytime..

Lose The Plastic Cups

This is one that I am trying to get to grips with.. I am one of those water drinkers who drink little cups of water during the whole day and must always have the stack of plastic cups around. The book gives little stats on how plastic damage and destroy and of course it leaves me open to think of options like having one plastic bottle of water (only thing  I hate drinking from bottles) or just one cup and keep refilling from a bottle – Wish me luck. This is one I am aiming to beat…

I bought a 36 pack of water and brought it into work the other day – but I still find myself passing the water fountain and grabbing a plastic cup of water… baby steps people, baby steps.

Number 093

Don’t Judge someone by the job they do

I have worked in the job I am in for a long time and I don't make friends there – why?..

Because the job I do don't allow for me to make friends, I basically gut operations, schedules and  departments… I am more than likely known as the hachette woman or the person that works in that office..

I like number 93 not so much for myself but for how people view other people who work with me… I am if nothing else but fair and objective, but I sometimes find human nature the oddest thing. I have a trainee with me now for the past few weeks the young lady is just 20 yrs old and some department give the poor chic the black eye when she passes by..

While she is learning, she really doesn’t have good things to say about those department, which is sad as they have basically judged her just for her association with my department… SAD

Get off one stop early.

Can I say no chance – Definitely no chance

I can barely walk from the train station home in the evening much less to get off one stop earlier – NO CHANCE..

Bottom Line

While not all the suggestions will work for everyone – there is enough there that any reader can more than likely identify with and make little changes. Then again there are stuff there that is just wishful suggestions – no chance of them getting done.

CHANGE THE WORLD 9 TO 5 is going to be hanging around on my bookshelf for a little while.

Perhaps one stop can be too much if it's far between, here, not so much. But then I take my bike every where :)
Oh those nasty plastic cups, I tend to go straight from the bottle

The have just introduce this cycle thing over here just last friday - so loads of people cycing here now...

The stop before my stop is about 5-6 minute - but it is really 5-6minutes that I dont want to walk...

That water thing - I am taking one day at a time... I used the bottle waters today, so that's a plus for me today...
