Weekly Geeks - Hoarding Behaviour and/or I Have a Problem

Please forgive the lateness of this post...I completely blanked about posting this even though I got an email reminder!!
So this week, I am curious about those gigantic TBR piles which readers tend to accumulate. Please share with us your habits, tendencies or obsessions when it comes to hoarding behaviour.

  • Post a photo (or two or three) of your books to-be-read
  • Share your buying or book accumulating habits - how bad of a problem do YOU have?!?!?
  • Do you keep all the books you've read, or do you give them away or sell them?
  • Can you walk past a bookstore and not go in? If you go in, do you impulsively purchase?

My Thoughts

I missed my weekly outing with the Geekers this Saturday and have decided to bump the post on this evening. We are asked to look deep into ourselves and drag out our darkest secret, to tell the world if we are hoarders or if we have a problem.

I AM A HOARDER and I DO NOT HAVE A PROBLEM

Post a photo (or two or three) of your books to-be-read

These are pictures of two of the shelves that are in my personal living area, I call them The Hoarding Shelves. The top two are the lot of books that gets me to bed, so there are loads of Mills& Boons or Harlequin/Blaze on there, there are some reference books and a handful of comics on there. I also keep little bric-a-brac on there as well.

This second shelf is the shelf I share with my nephew, I say share because I can’t get his stuff off if it. No matter how I move those silly bikes to the toy box they end up back on that shelf. This is the shelf that I use the most for books that are sorta at the top of my list to read, books to be posted out and Videos I need to watch. I love this shelf because it’s near a window and I have a really cozy chair just there to enjoy my evenings.

Share your buying or book accumulating habits - how bad of a problem do YOU have?!?!?

I have been blessed or probably lucky for most of my live to be in situations where I have first dibs at books and that was where my hoarding habits started.

I now do volunteer work in a shop where half there stock is books – I do all the books there, so naturally I get first crack at the whole lot.

The library helps in my obsession in having books lying around – I normally come home with the maximum amount I am allowed on my library card.

Discount shops with books in the window – draws me in like a moth to a flame.

Because I am a reader, my family always, always gravitate towards giving me a book or vouchers for any sort of special event in my life.

I am one of those people that embraced ebooks in it’s infancy and now the bulk of my books are either stored on two hard drive or in the clouds. I don't  have a total of the amount of ebooks I own.

Do you keep all the books you've read, or do you give them away or sell them?

I give away at least 70 percent of all the paper books I own – If the book hits my keeper shelf button, it gets moved downstairs to sit on one of the other three book shelves. Other than that I believe in sharing the wealth, I try not to keep book around too long – there is only so much time I can say I will read that, or it’s going on that list – After a year I get rid of it.

I swap alot of books.

I do not sell books…

Can you walk past a bookstore and not go in? If you go in, do you impulsively purchase?

Let me keep it simply – I rarely if ever walk pass a bookstore and I do alot of impulse buy, but I do limit myself even them.

What are your hoarding habits?

Are you brave enough to post your hoarding shelves?

I didn't dare to post a pic of our shelves, lol. We are in transition of re-arranging and getting rid of a lot, so the picture would not be true to our organized nature. Just kidding. You seem to be a bigger hoarder than I am, my TBR pile, which is only virtual because the boks are scattered about, is rather small.

I saw you have an AKM Miles book in your sidebar. Must check it out.

I'm a hoarder! I do sell or give away books that were meh, but I have tons that I can't get rid of. Thank goodness for ebooks.

Yikes after a year! I am terrible really, I tell myself I will read it one day, and these are books I could love..I am just very slow to read sometimes-. But afterwards I spread the wealth

I only hoard e-books. I have very few paper books which are keepers. I get rid of them almost immediately and rarely buy them since I discovered e-books.

My TBR is not outlandish though. I know there are people with TBRs in the 100's *coughLilycough* but mine rarely gets above 40 and then I read like mad and get it down to about 20.

I do however LOVE bookstores even if they don't carry the books I'm reading now. I still like to browse and in big cities my daughter starts eyerolling if we even get near one. LOL She has a Pavlovian response now, the minute we enter a bookstore she has to go to the bathroom. Which works as they alwasy have public toilets. :-) Not impulse buying because of the lack of m/m in most bookstores.

I do read alot and I like to keep different genres close at hand...

Good luck with the re-arranging.. that can be tricky buisness as well..

Yup I am just reading the AKM book... not bad.

Yikes after a year!

I never understand people who keep books forever and a day and say I will read it some day... it makes no sense..

Share the wealth hon - I agree.

I used to be a hoarder too, but since I'm reading ebooks I actually started to give away and sell a lot of books. A lot of them still unread.
I just buy more books than I can read, still do that with ebooks *sigh*
Loved your pics of your special shelves btw! :)

I like your shelves! :)

Mine look similar...LOL

Chris on 22 June 2010 at 03:03 said...

I have some pretty full shelves. :) I did recently pull a bunch of stuff off (mostly from the thrift store or the library discards room) and admit I wasn't going to read any of it. Back to the thrift store! I hope I resist it when it hits the shelves again. ;)

Donna on 22 June 2010 at 04:39 said...

I'm definitely a hoarder! But I have finally started cleaning off my bookshelves by swapping them at PaperBackSwap and on Goodreads. The only reason I started this is because I was desperately running out of room to store my new books. :)

I very, rarely can pass any bookstore without popping in and having a look around. If I don't, I feel like I might of missed something.

Lily on 22 June 2010 at 04:52 said...

@Tam... Do you need some cough syrup?? LOL

It's extremely rare for me to buy paperbacks now since I discovered ebooks.

I'll confess, since Tam's already mentioned it, that my TBR is huge. I have been trying to read more from the TBR instead of new books. Not working out as good as I hoped. So yes, my ebook TBR is in the hundreds and as hard as I try it just doesn't seem to go down.

And since I read M/M most of my paperback collection is stored in bins except for my M/F TBR (about 20 books or so) which is sitting on a shelf unread.

Ava March on 22 June 2010 at 05:45 said...

Like Lily, I don't buy many paperbacks anymore. Most of my purchases are e-books and I never ever ever delete those files. Even if I didn't like a book, it stays on the old hard drive.

If a print book makes it to the keeper shelf, it's there forever. I just can't part with the Keepers. If I lend one to share the love, I need it back. If it's not a keeper, I'll share the love and let them keep the love. Keepers...must be returned. I'll buy someone the book before I let them keep my read Keeper. :)

Oh my goodness! Lol - it always makes me feel better to see other's bookshelves :D

Erotic Horizon on 22 June 2010 at 10:35 said...

@Tam..

My ebooks TBR pile is really big - but the paper back one, because I am really trying hard to whittle it down it is not great but better than it was last year...

I can't ever remember a time I had 40 books in my TBR pile... Unheard of, go you!!!...

My kidlet will at least make an attempt and look around a bookshop/outlet/whatever- because he does read as well, but if there is nothing for him, he is ready... no class I tell you...

I hope I resist it when it hits the shelves again

**waving wilding at you hon***

I was desperately running out of room to store my new books.

Some books I cannot get rid of - I am running out of space for my cookbooks - But I just cannot part with those... What to do....

Passing - bookshop - NEVER....

@Lily..

I'll leave it to you and Tam to duke it out over your cough drops... ...

Sometimes I am frustrated by my huge back log of ebooks but then I think if I have no funds to shop from one month to the next, I have enough books to tied me over for the next decade...

Me too hon - I am always amazed at people who just delete these after they have read them - it just feels like money down the drain...

I'll buy someone the book before I let them keep my read Keeper.

I know his feeling - I really hate loaing out keeper shelf material - I have learned the hard way about how some people care for their books..
