Discussion Point – Book Care & Bad Habits

Growing up in the Caribbean I had a fantastic childhood and I have the most wonderful memories of fun times in my home. However in a houseful of people with different taste and ambitions, I quickly marked off my territory and the only person who was allowed into my inner sanctuary was my Dad.

Why you ask  - because my Dad was the only true reader in the household aside from myself and I shared some fantastic times with him. Two of the core principle in regards to reading that I got  from my father were.

1. If you don't’ read – you don’t know – and if you don’t read – you can’t converse to the best of your ability…

2. Book care – practice it, live it and never forget it.

I have lived up to number one,  I read and I read a hell of alot of different things. I have however added my little bit to that phrase “ Pick your battles, not because it’s there that means you need to jump onto the bandwagon”. So far I am doing well.

Number 2 is what I am talking about today, Book Care. Do you guys practice book care and I know there are still alot of us who still read books not just have the ereader attached to our fingers.

  • Ensure your hands are clean
  • Do not keep books in a damp area.
  • Keep them accessible, since that's what books are for.
  • Dust regularly and watch for moths or other worms (bookworms) that eat into the glue and pages.
  • Avoid using adhesive and sticky tapes on books.
  • To protect books from wear and tear use plastic dust jackets.
  • Do not use books as coasters.
  • Do not eat or drink while you read.
  • Avoid loaning books out.
  • For left to right reading, hold book in left hand and turn with right hand.
  • Turn pages by top corner of right hand page.
  • Slide right hand under page to turn and bring to left side in one stroke.
  • Do not turn with left thumb on bottom center of right hand page as this can tear the pages accidentally.
  • Do not fold the corner of a page over to mark your spot. Instead use a flat bookmarker.

Those are some of the things my Dad and I went through when I was ten. As the years went by little tips and tricks was taught to me on how to care for my books. Some of it seems common sense, but when you are snuggled down in bed or the corner of the sofa with a much anticipated book – a cup of tea, do you care how you spin the pages or how many dog-ears you place in it when the phone rings…

And this takes me to bad habits in reading .. Kris from Kris  N Good Books told us about three of her bad habits the other day at DIK … They were

The comments of those link are where the meat of that post really take place – I warn you however gird your loins because some of it isn’t pretty.

I do have my bad habits as well, I overstuff my shelves, I have way too many books – more than I will ever possible read even in my lifetime and I get tunnel vision when I see a book that I want… I must get it.

My Question..

Do you practice Book Care or are you a fly by the seat of your pants sort of reader.

And secondly share one or two of your book reading bad habits with us.

Oh I take very good care of my books! I live by the rules you just listed! You will NEVER see me break the spine or dog-ear pages. There are books I've read several times that still look brand new (Didn't even break the spine).
Sadly my friends to not understand and they do not care at all about keeping books brand new. This is why I stopped lending my books, it was breaking my heart to see what was happening of my precioussssssssssss. lol

I have to admit that, like Kris...I often read the ending before reading the book *hides in shame* lol This is a bad habit of mine, and it will be the end of me. The last book I read, Addicted by Charlotte Featherstone, I read the last page of the epilogue to know what was happening...and I jumped to the wrong conclusions, bahhhhhhh I got it ALL wrong lol I regret dearly having read the end before reading the book...but i'm just too curious I NEED to know if it will end well and who I should be rooting for lol. Bad Bad habit!

I never loan books - Just my Mom cleaning the shelves out almost stress me out...

I cannot abide lack of care for a book...

I hope you have learned your leasson from jumping to the back - Whatever the ending is, you are gonig to get there eventually...

The surprise is part of the pleasure of reading..

Yes ma'am - I know of your bad habit...

It's not too late to change..

..I break spines *sigh of relief* There I said it, and I enjoy doing it too. I am a bad bad book lover.

And I eat when I read, drop it on the floor, carry it around, read them at the beach. My poor books

Well, I'm not bad bad. I don't abuse them and I've never heard of bookworms in Canada. Not the insectoid kind anyway.

I do loan out books, I read and eat/drink sometimes, I don't focus on how I hold it, I do what's comfy. I do usually try to use a bookmark but if I'm just running to the bathroom (I don't read in the loo LOL), I lay it face down which makes some people crazy.

I guess at this point there's no point in my attempting to lie. LOL.

I'm told it's a liberating feeling to say it out loud.. Hope you feel better..

I am going to pretend as if I hadn't read the rest of your comment...

Food, sand ***shudders***

My Dad was paranoid about the bookshelf - it was just so hot there, anything was liable to get into those book..

I just give the book away - because I am going to check it when I get it back and there will blood - so I take the path of least resistance..

I see you have not commited the cardinal sin - book in the loo.. Good for you..

At least make the bloody attempt.... Shameless...

I try to be good to my books. I like them to look new, no matter how many times I've read them. I learned my lesson the hard way to stop lending them except to a select few who treat them well.

Bad habit - I do eat while I read (I know, it's a bad habit in more ways than one!).

My biggest pet peeve with books is dog-earring the pages. I can't stand it when I see people do this. I always use a book marker, receipt, business card, etc.

Or using an MP3 player a book marker. Yep, I let my stepdaughter borrow a book last week I caught her carrying the book with her MP3 player in between the pages, marking her place. The book hard covers bowed. Needless to say, I wasn't very happy with her. :(

Overall, I do take good care of my books. My worst habit is I'll read while I'm eating. But I always make sure I wipe my hands before I turn the page. ;) I guess that's where ereaders are handy -- while eating. LOL!

I think I do pretty well on the book care - other than the stuff I picked up used, you'd be hard pressed to tell from the spines which paperbacks I've read. I do read while I eat, but my book is in a bookholder and away from my food. I make sure I have a clean hand to turn pages, even when eating.

Erotic Horizon on 25 March 2010 at 11:23 said...

All of us have to learn that lesson before we stop loaning our books hon..

I speak from experience..

I am getting the impression alot of people eat while reading.

I am so there with you hon - and that MP3 story **shudders**

Permanent lump in the middle..

Another eater and reader I see.. there's a whole gang of you out there..

I expected nothing less from you.. I can't imagine you having time for a lot of print stuff - as I know you love your ereader alot...

Chris on 25 March 2010 at 11:51 said...

LOL - I do, that, but my bookshelves are stuffed full. :)

Lily on 25 March 2010 at 18:02 said...

Since 99% of what I read now are ebooks I take most excellent care of my books. :D

Print books however don't always get the best of care. I do try but I admit to sometimes cracking spines, reading in the bathroom and eating & drinking while reading.

Very bad of me, I know.

Erotic Horizon on 25 March 2010 at 21:16 said...

I am in the same boat as well - not willing to part with my reader for any period of time - but have an overstuff shelf that needs to be read..

Erotic Horizon on 25 March 2010 at 21:18 said...

I have heard about you as well and your spine cracking ways - but I guess I can understand...

As for ebooks that's one of the absolute beauty of owning one - you dont have to worry about shelf space and you only need to dust your hard drive as and when you remember..

happy reading hon..
