Discussion Point – What's with all the Twinks

A few years ago when I figured out that there was a whole world of people brave enough and ditzy enough to have what is now known as book blogging – I was in second heaven…

As a reader all my life – I am a big fan of the imagination. I love the build up, the possibilities, the impossibilities…

Somewhere over the last couple of years more and more I am seeing these young nubile things displayed in every conceivable pose and photoshopped to death…

Not that they were not around before, but I can’t remember seeing them in this abundance. Am I getting old, have I lost the zest to appreciate a sexy young man display with all his plumes erect…  because I am not loving it.

It’s not only on blogs it’s on book covers, album covers, perfume bottles – what the hell is up with the Twinks…

What about a mature man or a mature woman or both. To top it all off you tend to see the same faces, the same smile and same everything  - naked…

Today’s topic came about after I received Danielle Steel – Rogue from my mother a few days ago… she couldn’t stop singing it’s praise and told me I must read. She was more so impressed with the cover – there was a man, a mature man in all his earthly glory on the cover…

Crows feet, laughter lines, greying at the temple and I thought good god why aren’t there more books with mature men on the cover – for that matter, more mature men around blogland period and dressed….

Don’t get me wrong, this has nothing to do with the content of either the blogs or books – but as we have become a visual nation, are Twinks the limit of our imaginations…

Have I grown up or is there really too much Twinks…. What’s your preference.

*gasp* Blasphemy! ;)

Being a perve, I'm all for pretties on book covers. Having said this, I agree that the character, in this case the older guy, should be reflected appropriately on book covers.

Gotta admit, though, I really don't like the ZAM book cover. But I LOVE Willa Okati's new cover for her book that feature mature protags. It's steamy. *g*

Even though I'm in my late 20's I do not like seeing covers with males that look to be in their early 20's. I like an older man with a 5:00 shadow and all that. For m/m covers...to see a young stud that looks 18 *shudder* makes me feel like a perv.

Chris on 13 January 2010 at 21:39 said...

I don't like the ZAM book cover either - creeps me out for some reason. But I do like seeing laugh lines and the like (like Nathan Kamp - Nathan's still hot, but he doesn't look 15, either). The super young looking ones just don't work for me.

I completely agree with you about the too young, too naked Twinks. The men I see on cover art are often little more than boys. They are too pretty and too muscle bound.

I prefer a man who looks like he's been around the block a few times and survived the experience, whose face shows character lines, whose nose isn't perfect, whose eyes show a wariness and depth of feeling; and whose mouth can curve into a knowing, wicked lop-sided grin. Too much muscle is a turnoff. Give me a man with a lean, muscular build who fills out a t-shirt, but doesn't strain the seams.

I know you love the pretties and I am hoping more authors start reflecting this on their covers - bacause there is quite a bit of May/December romace type stories on the market...

Please tell the name of the Okati book - I can't find it....

@K.C..

I think I am now at the stage where I am blanking the twinky looking covers and photo I come up on now...

That is one of the pluses of reading ebooks - I am not constantly seeing the covers around me...

I *shudder* right along with you my dear...

I can look at a picture of a twinky guy and appreciate his fine assets, his lovely smooth skin, taut buttocks and rosy lips. I have to say though that whilst in the midst of the appreciation there's a niggly voice working out the age difference between me and twinky guy and condemning me for a perve.

That is why I do generally prefer my men to be a little older. The twinks are blank slates waiting for age and experience to write on them. I like a man who looks like he's been around a bit and is happy in his own skin. Laughter lines are sexy, so are greying temples and that roughness of chin than men get as they age. Give me Daniel Craig or Johnny Depp over Zac Efron any day.

@Chris..
I was not loving the cover but I was impressed by the fact that they used those modeled...

They suited the book... they looked like they had lived...

I am the only one who is not over the moon about Nathan... he's mehhhh for me...

I'll only add to that - and fill out a pair of jeans.....

I totally love how you phrased that....

The twinks are blank slates waiting for age and experience to write on them.

I wish they would give them time to grow up and get some of that life written on them - before they are overused...

I too also appreciate the body - in any form, but lordy this is just overkill now....

I must try that and start working out their ages as well - thats funny...

I appreciate the beauty of men of all ages, but it does bother me when the half-naked guys look like they recently left the high school classroom.

I just want the guy on the cover to "match" the character. If the character is supposed to be around 28-30, he shouldn't look 18. I love the covers with older men, but the ZAM one has bothered me. I just think those two look older than the actual character.

EH, the book is called "And call me in the morning". WO posted the cover on the Friction with Fiction site here: http://www.fictionwithfriction.com/2010/01/11/release-date-for-and-call-me-in-the-morning/

Kindle Vixen on 14 January 2010 at 03:34 said...

I am cool with it, but maybe thats because I don't consider many of those covers to be guys fresh out of highschool... with the exception of the creepy one in the middle. The others look more like 24/25 years old. I don't know any 18 year olds that ripped LMAO.

The Lauren Dane cover does it for me... the scruffy shadow and the hips.... sigh. I am 31, but maybe I am a perv LMAO. Funny enough hubby is older than I am.

I love seeing a mature man on a book cover. And I totally agree that ZAM's book cover is weird. They look like creepy brothers to me.

I like the cover of Silver & Gold although the young guy is too young looking for how I pictured him. Lisabet's cover looks good too.

The guy on the Rogue cover is hot!! He reminds me of lust inducing Daniel Craig.

Ava March on 14 January 2010 at 05:48 said...

Well, I love beautiful men. They can be pretty twinks or 40+ yr old hunks with a yummy coarseness about them. Matters not to me. If that makes me a glutton, then I'm a happy glutton. LOL.

In all seriousness though, I prefer cover images that somewhat match the characters in the book. If the guy is supposed to be a rugged in-your-face man, then a twink on the cover (no matter how pretty) will annoy me.

Marquetta on 14 January 2010 at 12:47 said...

I completely agree! There's no real looking men anymore! What happened to men with facial hair or body hair? I think these days guys wax/shave more than women do! I think the sexiest man on this planet is George Clooney. He's sexy, handsome and manly. Would love to see more men that look like him on covers than these overly groomed twinks.

Erotic Horizon on 14 January 2010 at 20:56 said...

@Eyre...

I agree with you on so many levels ... and especially in your profession it is proabably more annoying..

I hope the few authors we see now using more mature model with hopefully build up over time..

If there is one blogger I know who likes a mature man I know it's you....

I also thought that guy was a bit young on the Rhodes book - but whatever works for them - go for it...

The guy on the Rogue cover is hot!! He reminds me of lust inducing Daniel Craig.

I thought the guy on Rogue is gorgeous.... simply goegeous...

A little of that I assume is with us appreciating different things as we grow older, however marketing doesn't help...

It's like the eternal youth market - once you look a certian age or step outside of the overwaxed, overtoned, overposed mould - then you are done for...

Totally with you on that....

I guess I am a perve because I like the young pretty ones way more than the old grandpa ones. And I am no spring chick. You and I will have to disagree on this one, EH, my friend

I think it makes a nice change to see the older guys on front covers of these books! But then I am older myself :)

Still like the younger bods to gawp at though!

Great topic EH! A lot of these guys do look like they are 18 or 20, I just don't I pay attention. I think I've become desensiatized to them because they are everywhere. Does that make sense?

Oh, but the Insatiable cover is hot! That one doesn't looked Photoshoped nor does the guy look like a twink to me. I will not lie about that. The rest I could live without.

Erotic Horizon on 18 January 2010 at 09:30 said...
