Review - Poker Night Bk3: Pocket Pair - Carol Lynne

Title: Poker Night Bk3: Pocket Pair

Author: Carol Lynne

Publisher: Total-E-bound

Main Characters: Trey Huggins & Cole Harding

Book three in the Poker Night Series

For three years, Trey Huggins has watched and wanted Principal Cole Harding. As a teacher in the high school where they both work, Trey knows it'll never happen. Even if Cole was gay, he'd never go for a guy like Trey.

Seeking love in other places, Trey meets a man online and finally agrees to a drink. What he gets instead is a trip to the emergency room in the back of an ambulance. With the school year swiftly approaching, Trey fights to overcome his physical limitations as well as his constant fear.

For twenty-five years, Cole has managed to keep his private life separate from his job. Extending a helping hand to a colleague shouldn't be a big deal, but the feelings Trey invokes in Cole are anything but professional.

Can the teacher tutor the principal in love, or will class be out for these two before the school year even begins?

“Would you be mad if I had the game over here? Then you could drop in when you felt like it, and still lie down if you need to.”

When Bobby took that tone, Trey knew he wasn’t going to be able to get out of it. “It’s your house. I just don’t want you changing your routine because of me.”

Bobby ran his hands through his hair. “You’ve refused to see any of the guys since the hospital. It’s getting harder and harder to put ’em off. They just love you, man, and they want to see for themselves that you’re healing.”

Trey knew his friends loved him. Heck, what would he do without them? But the shame he felt over what he’d allowed to happen was too much. “I just can’t stand the thought of anyone pulling the ‘What were you thinking?’ thing on me. I’ve had enough of that from the police.”

“And you honestly think any of us would pull that shit on you?”

Trey didn’t say anything, because truth was, yeah, he definitely believed a few of them thought it. Whether they actually came out and said it was a fifty-fifty proposition.

With his lower lip stuck out just enough for Trey to know he’d hurt his feelings, Bobby started to get up.

“Wait.” Trey reached out, but fell short of actually touching his friend. “Have the guys over. I’ll try.”

Bobby stared at him for several moments before nodding and retreating to the house.

Trey covered his eyes with his arm. The thing he couldn’t seem to explain to Bobby was that it wasn’t the rape that held him back. It was the shame that he’d been so desperate for someone to love him that he’d been willing to do almost anything.

The things he’d done via a web cam for JB101 made him blush just thinking about it. What would happen if his friends found out? He felt guilty enough that he hadn’t told the police about them. At the time they only asked him if he’d had online correspondence with the rapist.

Trey heard the sliding glass door open. “The guys will be here at seven.”

“Will Jules be home?” he asked. He liked Jules a lot. He never asked him questions about how he was feeling emotionally. Jules was concerned with his physical well-being, but he was smart enough to know not to pry into the emotional side of his recovery.

“Yeah. He should be home any minute. Why? Do you need something?” Bobby asked.

“No. Just wondered.”

Review

Its a few weeks since Trey Huggins has been involved in what is now known as “the incident” and he is still hiding away not only from his friends but his job and the man that he has been lusting after for about three year now.

With friends like the ones he have, someone was bound to tell him some truths and try to get him out of his depression and what better way than forcing him to acknowledge a call from the one person that he thought would never look at him in a million years.

When the call that Cole Harding had not really been expecting came he certainly did not think he would end up with Trey sitting across from him late at night.

Things moves on quickly for the two ill suited men and they both make every attempt at finding that common ground between them, but there is more to lose for each man and they may not really have what it takes to see this thing that's building between them through.

When Ms. Lynne introduced the Poker Nights series I was one of her fans that rubbed my hands in glee and had a little smirk on my face, because yes this woman has some imagination.

POCKET PAIR is the third in the Poker night series and it is a powerful book on one hand but for some reason it so did not live up to the expectation that I had probably built up for Trey's partnership on the other hand..

The book dives straight into heartbreaking areas and it never really stopped - friendship, honour, protectiveness and taking a chance despite everything that the relationship had going for it to survive,  are some of the issue that rose above the surface of this book. Despite all that there was this feeling of everything fitting two neatly into the boxes – other than Trey traumatic experience the angst was really non existent between them.. and that was were my total disappoint came about – I suppose  I was expecting bells and whistles after all Trey’s character has been building up over the past two book and I was just expecting more for him.

Regardless of the convenience of some aspect of the story it kept pace with the other two books in the series – with minimal character development and the entire story revolving around the friends and their search in finding happiness. A whole lot of emotional tension filled this story along with some in your face angst from the support cast. This book tossed in one or two new players and the next book looks to be a firecracker of a storm….

Review – The Wolfe Proxy - T. D. McKinney & Terry Wylis

Title: The Wolfe Proxy

Author: T. D. McKinney & Terry Wylis

Publisher: Amber Quill

Main Characters: Quinton Wolfe & Max Bowman

Ruthless CEO Quinton Wolfe sets off every alarm on sculptor Max Bowman’s warning system. No way is that playboy getting near Max’s sister, the newest shareholder in Wolfe's multinational corporation. No matter Quint’s charming smile and sexy form, Max won't let his kid sister get taken in by that Lothario. Even if it means Max cuts a deal with Big Bad Wolfe himself.

And what a deal! Max becomes Quint’s play toy. Good thing Max enjoys it. He’ll just play the game until he can turn the tables on the CEO. Or that’s the plan. But somehow, even knowing the CEO is a ruthless snake at the core, Max still lets Quint worm his way right into Max’s heart.

Cutting Quint out of his life is the best thing Max can do. So why does it feel like Max might never be able to breathe again? It doesn’t help that Quint’s every bit as heartbroken and miserable. So maybe Max’s view of Quint was skewed by the media. But can he separate the ruthless CEO from the gentle, caring man who loves him? And can he trust either one?

“Jennifer’s not a piece of arm candy. I can do better than her without breaking the seal on my Rolodex. What she is, Maxwell, is an unknown entity in my very stable financial house of cards. I need to know if she’s glue or a wind machine, and if trotting her around to the local hot-spots will get me that information, I’ll use it.”

Ah, pretty Max was even prettier with that splash of color across his cheeks. “I figured that’s what you were doing. I won’t let you hurt her just so you can make another twenty-five cents on your dividend check.” Anger really suited Max, Quint had to admit. It made his eyes glitter and a muscle in that solid jaw twitch. Quint wanted to lick that spot. “And if I have to, I’ll see she uses her shares in ways you won’t like. She’ll still give me half if I ask. And you can imagine what I’d do with them.”

Quint could imagine far too well. Max would use any proxy he had to see Quint never sat on the board of directors even though it would be best for WolfeCorp. And when that bit of petty revenge had been accomplished, the bastard would sell the shares, pocket the money, and go his no doubt substance-enhanced way not caring that he’d destroyed a business to which Quinton’s father and grandfather had devoted their lives. He wouldn’t care if Quint’s employees suffered or not.

Quint took a step closer to his newest nemesis. “Oh, I can imagine. And you imagine what I’ll do with your sister.”

Those blue eyes flashed fire. “You so much as look at my sister again, Wolfe, and I swear you’ll be on the wrong end of a welder’s rig.” That muscle in Max’s jaw jumped again. “You want her out of your office, fine. I’ll make sure she stays out. Just get the hell away from us.”

Neanderthal. Did he think physical threats would frighten Quint? Well, pretty Max was very wrong. They didn’t. Not the least bit. It only sent a new jolt of rage through Quint. So Max Bowman thought he could possibly come up to Quint’s speed? Hardly! Quint would show the insufferable caveman exactly how to play the game of fear, intimidation, and extortion. “Oh, I’ll stay away. For a price.”

“What price?” Max’s eyes narrowed and that solid body tensed. “I told you I’d keep her out of your way. That’s plenty.” The industrial door rattled open again. “So we have a deal and you can get your over-toned ass the hell off my property.”

“I don’t think so.” Hardball just went granite, boy. In a blink Quint had Max Bowman up against the wall next to the door, a hand to each side of the sculptor’s head. It took all Quint had not to kiss that acerbic mouth, but this was business. “You see, Mr. Bowman, I have no choice in the matter of guiding dear Jennifer through the finer points of corporate navigation. I have yet to learn what stipulations dear Great-aunt Elaine made if your sister fails to take an active part in WolfeCorp.” By God he’d know by Monday, though. A call to his lawyer on his way home would take care of that. “So you see, I can’t accept your offer. But I do have a counterproposal. It’s not negotiable. Either you agree to it or I will use every ploy at my disposal to protect my company, even if it means luring dear, sweet Jennifer into my bed and under my thumb.”

Quint let out his own smirk, recalling the two artists at the picnic and the very loud vibe he’d gotten. His counteroffer left his knees weak at the prospect. Too bad Bowman wouldn’t go for it in a million years...

Review

Quinton Wolfe has set his sights on being the majority shareholder in the company that has been in his family for a few generations – this was not to be when Max Bowman’s sister turns up with her own large slice of the company and Max is  like a watchdog, on the look out for any and all move that Quinton will make against his sister.

And Quinton does make his move, but it is unexpected for them both – firstly Quinton makes a move against Max himself and Max accepts which Quinton did not anticipates. Going with the flow – it turns out to be a soul shattering experience for them both.

All does not bode well for them – because these two men are not what they seem, beneath the exterior they show the public they have their secrets and their turmoil's to deal with and it is that secret and turmoil that is the crust of their problems – something has to give and someone has to do something because these two aren’t about to do it on their own.

I love this book – Quinton was so not what I was expecting, he comes across as really this big bad wolf but he was really a pussy cat once you found which buttons to press and Max found these button straight away. Max himself is no wallflower himself -  preferring to be out of the limelight he knows when to  turn the table and take charge and he does so in style..

Totally hot smut follows and I was loving it.

This is a feel great book, not that the characters weren’t well develop or not that the plot held me for the whole length of the book – but the authors toss in enough twist and turns and some wonderful support cast to make this not only have the happily ever after feel but also a little hurt along the way is not all bad feel as well.

I like the voices of these two authors, it didn’t get caught up in the complexities of the business arena that the book was set it, they both had a fresh approve to an age old plot – and I liked it alot.

If you are looking for that book with the right bit of depth wrapped around a plot with enough innuendo ands armchair psychiatrist this is the book for you..

A simply smashing read.

Review - Alexa Wells Series: Stripped [Prequel to Half-Breed]- Marcia Colette

Stripped_ColetteV3-small

Title: Stripped

Author: Marcia Colette

Publisher: Samhain Publishing

Main Characters: Alexa Wells & Matt York

Someone wants their perfect weapon back, only she’s not coming quietly.

Alexa Wells wants her life back. She’s just not sure what that life was. The memories inside her head—a stripper’s—aren’t hers, and before she humiliates herself onstage one more time, she sets out to collect the scattered pieces of her mind. The trail leads to Boston, charges of identity theft and murder, and the real bombshell: a forgotten werewolf lover who insists she’s a werewolf hybrid.
Matt York doesn’t care that she looks at him like he’s been smoking crack between court cases. Now that he has her back he’s not about to let her go it alone, even if she can easily kick ass and take names all by herself. Amnesia only scratches the surface of her problems, and like it or not, she’s stuck with him.
She’s also stuck with Robert Gamboldt, a venture capitalist who’s not above murdering his way to the top. He’s not about to lose his prize possession without playing dirty. It’s a simple enough offer. Be his personal assassin, or go to jail.
With options like that, it’s enough to make a hybrid go full-blood.

*Note: This is the prequel to Half Breed.

Thick, hazy smoke and bright lights hid the faces of the drunken men as they cheered and hurled obscenities. As soon as empty beers mugs clapped on tabletops, hands raised to flag down X-rated waitresses for refills. The music thumped hard enough to break through my chest. Despite the painful noise, the degrading banter stayed with me. They didn’t have any right to yell and whistle at me like some nickel whore.
This must have been a nightmare. Like the kind you have when you’re dreaming you’re naked on stage and you wake up realizing it was only in your mind.
One problem: I was partially naked, on a stage, and even my mind wanted to hide under a rock. Not funny at all, considering I had no idea how I had gotten here.
I dared to shift my eyes to the right. They landed on a gold pole stretching from the stage to the black-painted ceiling. Just as I thought. No amount of pinching would wake me from this horror.
Colored lights radiated overhead, heating the center stage. I knew how a hamburger under a heat lamp felt. I stood in the middle of the waxed hardwood floor while two more strippers danced at opposite ends of the stage. The music hit an ear-blasting crescendo and the dancers tore off the tops of their striped prisoner uniforms. Two pairs of boobs jutted out at the same time.
If there was a cue, I missed it. My behind wasn’t dropping a thing for these bums.
Pain bit into the side of my big toe. Tight straps nearly strangled it to numbness. I glanced down, pulling my bent knee inward. A very naked knee at that. Someone had strapped a pair of five-inch, black stiletto heels around my bony ankles. It was a miracle I remained standing in these things.
My hands clung to both edges of the tiny policeman’s jacket. A black thong rode up my butt crack like floss through teeth, no thicker than the straps on my heels. Something sat on my head, holding my wavy black hair down. Reaching up, I pulled off a policeman’s hat with a bright, shiny badge pinned in the center. Gee, why didn’t that surprise me?
“Come on, baby,” a man yelled at the edge of the stage. Between the missing teeth and the long stringy hair, I would rather kiss a donkey’s crap-filled ass than go near that creep. His hand thumped the small round table, sloshing beer from his mug. “Come on, sugar. Blast me with those cute little tits y’all got hidin’ under thar.”
How I had sunk to this level, I didn’t have a clue. In fact…I didn’t have much of a clue about anything. Not my name, where I had come from, or family. It was all…gone.
Men loitered in every nook and cranny of the seedy saloon. Some shoved shot glasses in their mouths while others gulped their beer from frosted mugs. A long bar stretched across the back wall where a half-dozen patrons waited for the bartenders to fill their orders. One of the barkeeps finished putting foam-dome touches on a beer before placing it on a tray covered with shot glasses and more mugs, and handing it off to a scantily dressed waitress. Then again, “scantily” was an understatement. She wore a V-neck outfit that covered up the areolas of her bulbous boobs and stretched down to barely cover her crotch. Another similarly dressed waitress made her way around a crowded table. I got a look at her fishnet pantyhose with the rest of the V riding up her ass and out to her shoulders. A man at the table slapped her on the bottom before smoothing his hand along her reddening butt cheek.
I didn’t know which was grosser—the outfits or the way these men degraded the women.
An image in the mirror behind the bar caught my attention. From this distance, my reflection showed me standing on the stage with my one hand tucked under my jacket ready to flash the room. Only now, the other two strippers stared at me like I had lost my mind. The dark-haired one nodded for me to take it off. I shook my head. She’d need a crowbar to get me out of my last shred of dignity.
My feet staggered backward. On the way, my elbow clipped the pole. Panic began chiseling away at my nerves. The men sitting closest to the stage pulled their heads back, faces twisting in bewilderment. That made two of us.
“Boooooo,” a man shouted. “What the hell’s wrong with this girl?”
“She’s probably on something.”
“Mr. Wiggly will straighten her out.”
“Whore!”

Review

What could it be like to wake up from yourself  and find yourself onstage and not on any stage but a stripped joint about to perform as the main act. That's exactly where Alexa Wells finds herself and what she finds herself doing. Stunned for a moment she know only one thing – this is not her and she wants her life back.

She quickly sets about to make things right. On the way she gets little bits and pieces of her old life, but nothing of the people she knew or how she knew the people she now comes into contact with. One such person is Matt York and he is not only in a rush to find out where Alexa has been for the past few months but he has no intention of letting her go again.

With her life in the same situation as her memory – in pieces, she is bombarded by a slew of people passing through her life and not all of them the friendly type – OK none of them the friendly type.

Alexa – for some reason reverts to a kick ass chick when confronted and she does not know where these skills are coming from. Not only does she have to find the missing pieces of her life – but someone is making a concerted effort in trying to keep her under their thumb and she knows she is not a woman to be under anyone’s thumb.

I visited Shape Shifter Romance blog a few weeks ago and STRIPPED jumped right off the pages at me – I had to have it. To say this book was  good would be an understatement – it was kick ass and a bag of chips on top.

STRIPPED is the prequel to HALF BREED, which was released a few years ago, as I have not had the pleasure yet of reading HALF BREED I could see the cast from the moment go and I loved them. When I met Alexa she was literally in a fight for her life and doing a good job of staying one step ahead or so she thinks – her life starts getting more complicated when she meets up with Matt a man she apparently knew in the life she is trying to remember but not how she knew him is known to her. Matt is a force to be reckoned with and she only knows the little he is willing to divulge – but she wants more and she wants it now.

Within all this memory recall, forces are at work to get Alexa back – YES, they want her back. Alexa is a one woman demolition team and someone knows the value of having her on their team – but who. With enemies and angst coming at them left right and centre they have only a hand full of people they can rely on and not much time in which to get to the bottom of what is going on.

Marcia Colette has created a world of wolves and supernatural forces fighting for supremacy and one man seem to be winning it all. The pace is fast – the action brutal and the term “I’m Sorry”non existent. As a new to me author she tick all my boxes with very descriptive language and with a clear structure to the plot – I was loving the little side stories that she used to gel the plot together while opening me up to a whole slew of characters that were just as easy to hate as they were to love.

Urban Fantasy lovers this is a must read – Alexa is an heroine that stands out among the crowd and refuse to back down or die. With few trusted friend and patchy memory she leaves a trail of chaos behind her on the streets of Boston and the local supernatural community is all abuzz as they know change is coming and it just might be in one called Alexa Wells.

HALF BREED - Marcia Colette

Alexa is keeping a secret from her husband and being half werewolf isn't it. After all, he's a full-blood. Despite their abnormalities, Matt and Alexa York have settled into suburbia and gone out of their way to look like the couple next door. Their rouse may have fooled an entire community, however, others remain unconvinced. The Georgia Pack learns that the Yorks have encroached on their territory. Most strays who venture into their land end up dead because they draw attention to themselves. A trail of corpses will do that. But the Yorks are different. They cook and clean, have plans to start a family, and have even joined the Halloween decoration committee. Instead of tearing them from their foundations, the pack is intrigued by the domestic suburbanites. Unfortunately, Alexa's less domestic than she seems. Not all wives are into crossbows, bowing knives, and jaw-crushing right hooks. Eight months ago, Alexa's bounty hunting group disbanded after a third of the team lost their lives in an ambush. Now they're back and expecting her to take her place. As if being an enigma to the Georgia Pack isn't enough, becoming a stranger to your husband is even worse. That's the price Alexa pays when her deception is deadlier than her aim.

Review - Refuge Shifters Bk2: Retribution – Carol Lynne

Title: Refuge Shifter Bk2: Retribution

Author: Carol Lynne

Publisher: Respendence Publishing

Main Characters: Hakan & Ryker Allen & Daniel

Three lonely souls find each other in the midst of an all out war between the shifters and the Hunters.

Mother Earth gave Ryker Allen rebirth over a century ago, his main purpose to protect Mother's shifter children. Ryker has never begrudged his duties, but the loneliness is something he'll never get used to.

Daniel was the King of the Coyotes until a mistake led to the decimation of his species. Alone and half-dead, he was taken in by a pack of wolf shifters as a pet for the Alpha's mate. When he's given a chance to live as an Alpha once again, he's reluctant to accept, afraid he's no longer worthy to lead.

Hakan is the son of Father Sky. He was awarded rebirth over a thousand years ago to protect the Native American Bird Shifters. When animosity towards Native Americans escalated, Hakan's charges took to the sky permanently, leaving him without a purpose. He's lived his long life alone, waiting for the day he can once again serve his Father.

Three men, three very different backgrounds, one thing in common. Loneliness. Can these three souls come together to form a family?

He glanced at his passenger. “I wish you would’ve eaten more of your lunch.”

Daniel squirmed in his seat. “It’s not that I’m not hungry. My stomach just isn’t used to eating much.”

“Maybe we should stop more often and get smaller meals into you, five or six times a day.”

Daniel shrugged. “I take it you don’t like skinny guys.”

Ryker reached across the seat and cupped the side of Daniel’s face. “You’re gorgeous, and you know it. Things might not be easy for awhile. I just want you as strong as possible.”

Daniel leaned into Ryker’s touch. “Jarek knows who his mate is.”

“Yeah? How do you know that?”

“Because he was happy about going to Refuge. Cougars are solitary animals, except when they’re planning to mate.”

The reasoning made sense to Ryker. “You could be right. Do you begrudge him?”

“No.”

“Then why is it bothering you?”

When Daniel didn’t say anything, Ryker’s hand slid back to the steering wheel. “I thought we’d talked about sticking together until you find your mate.”

“We did,” Daniel whispered. “And it’s fine. I like you a lot.”

“But…?”

Ryker saw Daniel wipe at his cheeks. He checked his rearview mirror and pulled over to the side of the road. He felt incredibly stupid for weaving dreams of spending time with Daniel. Ryker would never admit it to a soul, but part of him hoped Daniel’s true mate had been killed by The Hunters.

“But…?” Riker repeated.

Daniel turned and looked up at him with tears in his eyes. Ryker couldn’t help but want to gather the small coyote shifter into his arms, and protect him from whatever was hurting him.

“I’m starting to feel funny. Like something’s coming.” Daniel shook his head. “Sounds stupid, but it’s like I’m being pulled from the inside.”

“To where?”

“I don’t know.” Daniel looked down at his hands. “But I’ve been hard since we left Jarek’s.”

Review

After sending the first wave of shifters on their way to Refuge, Ryker and Daniel are on their way to find Hakan the sky guardian. Ryker is concern about Daniel’s food intake and his depressing mood. He barely gets a chance to voice is concern before a more pressing matter seem to be affecting them both.

Both men are drawn to the area that Hakan lives and as soon as they lay eyes on him, it seems to be affecting Hakan as well. These three men are top of their race and now it seems as if Mother earth and father sky have set them on a path that will see some big changes for the world and apparently Daniel is the key that hold this all together.

While these three are trying to sort out their lives as impossible as it seem – the hunters are at it again and this time Hakan, Ryker and Daniel are literally in a race against time to set matters in motion’ when betrayal and doubt rear's it’s head all may yet just be lost.

I am so pleased this book came out so quickly after the first book. I liked the first book but this second book brings out what Lynne's best - joining men together with an eye on the smut and a big chunk of emotional upheaval tossed in. A lot more than the back history of Ryker and Daniel is delved into in this second book,

This is a fast pace book and as usual with Lynne’s writing there is just something that hold you and you really don’t want it to end. I saw old favourites setting up families, introduced to a whole new specie and I shared in what looks to be the main protags from the next book joy and pain.

For the second book in a new series by Lynne RETRIBUTION is a weightier book than EXTINCTION and I totally enjoyed.

Review – Men Of Alaska Bk2 - Animal Instinct – Paige Tyler

Title: Men Of Alaska Bk2: Animal Instinct

Author: Paige Tyler

Publisher: Whiskey Creek Press (Torrid)

Main Characters: Heidi Gibson & Luke McCall

Every Girl Wants a Guy Who's an Animal in Bed!Artist Heidi Gibson is spending the summer up in Anchorage doing some painting when she gets
attacked by a crazed wolf. She is rescued by golden-eyed wildlife biologist Luke McCall, who calmly informs she has been bitten by a werewolf and will turn into one during the next full moon. Thinking he’s obviously out of his mind, she can’t get away from him fast enough. When strange things start happening to her, however, she begins to think the ruggedly
handsome biologist could be right. Not knowing  what else to do, she goes to Luke and is stunned to discover that he knows so much about werewolves because he’s one himself.

As Luke teaches her what she needs to know about being a werewolf, Heidi finds herself falling hard for the Alaskan hunk. But while they’re intent on each other, the werewolf that attacked her comes back into the picture, and he’s not exactly happy that another of his kind is trying to take the woman he believes is his rightful mate.  Can Luke and Heidi's attraction overpower the jealousy of the rogue werewolf?

She lifted her head to find her rescuer regarding her with the most unusual gold eyes. How
had she not noticed the color before? Because she’d been too busy thinking about other
things, like bleeding to death. She shook her head. “I…I don’t understand. I’m confused. I
must be in shock,” she said. “I was just bitten by a wolf. How can I already have a scar?”
“Because you weren’t bitten by an ordinary wolf.”
She frowned at him. “What the heck does that mean?”
He was silent for a moment, as if he were trying to think of what he wanted to say. Finally,
he ran his hand through his dark hair and let out a sigh. “Look, I know this is going to
sound bizarre,” he said. “But you were bitten by a werewolf.”
Heidi stared at him incredulously. A werewolf? She must be hallucinating or something
from all the blood she’d lost because there was no way she could have heard him right. “A
what?”
“A werewolf,” he said again.
Heidi blinked. Okay, so she wasn’t hallucinating. He was just a raving lunatic. Which was
really hard to believe, considering he looked so normal. Not to mention disappointing,
since he was so dang gorgeous. She took a step back, then another, her hands out in front
of her. “Listen, I don’t know what you’re on, but –”
He scowled. “I’m not on anything,” he said, taking a step toward her. “If you’d just give me
a chance to explain –”
“I think you’ve explained yourself quite enough,” Heidi told him. She quickly glanced over
her shoulder, then at him before she began backing toward her car. “Look, I’m really
grateful for what you did back there, but I need to get to the hospital.”
Her rescuer followed. “Okay, if you insist on going to the hospital, I’ll take you,” he said.
“But at least listen to what I have to say first.”
Right. Like she was going to go anywhere with him. She dug into the pocket of her khaki
shorts for her car keys and pressed the unlock button on the keyless entry, wondering if
she should hit the panic button, too. But who would hear it all the way out there?
“That’s okay,” she said as she opened the door. “I can drive myself.”
Heidi was half afraid that he would insist, and she was relieved when he nodded. “Okay,”
he said. “But take my card.”
She stood there watching him as he reached into his back pocket for his wallet, wondering
why she didn’t just get in her car and leave. He took a business card from his wallet and
held it out to her.
“Take it,” he said.
She did, but only because she thought he might get upset, or even worse, follow her to the
hospital if she didn’t.
“You’ve been bitten by a werewolf,” he continued, “Which means you’re going to become
one, too, and when your body starts changing, you’re going to need my help.”
Did he even know how crazy he sounded? Probably not, or he wouldn’t be saying such
bizarre things. “I have to go,” she said, turning back to her car.
He caught her arm, his expression earnest. “There’s a full moon in a few days,” he told her.
“You’ll need to call me before that.”
Right. Like she was ever going to call him

Review

After a conversation with his brother about his social life, the last things Luke McCall expect to be doing a few hours later is fending off a werewolf attack on a woman. The best he could do in the circumstance is to assist the woman and give her his business card – because she was just not open to the idea that she was attacked by a werewolf and he was pressed for time to get a lead on the attacking wolf.

Heidi Gibson is in the mountainous region of Alaska for some rest/juice rejuvenation - as being an artist she needs all the inspiration she can get and she was certainly getting inspiration in the beautiful Alaskan mountain. Being attacked by a wolf was so left field from anything she has ever known, but to have a man tell her she was attacked by a werewolf was simply the last straw. If he was not going to help her – she had to get medical help herself and not hear anymore lunacy.

Heidi finds herself using that business card sooner than she thought she would after a series of things are out of sync in her life – then she meets beautiful, brawny Luke and it feels like coming home. This was not a fairy tale in the mountains, as someone has clearly targeted Heidi and Luke has to put a stop to this before he loses Heidi, he might just yet lose Heidi however because irrespective of their feelings for each other she only has a few days left before she has to pack it all up and make her way home.

ANIMAL INSTINCT the second book in Paige Tyler’s Men Of Alaska series and without a doubt a better book than the first one. Firstly the plot doesn’t feel as stilted as the first book and there is a definite flow to the language of this book. The two main protags while enough character development was not done on them in my opinion, they certainly made up for that with emotional angst and a most convincing developing romance.

There were a bit more support cast to this book and they carved out their own space in this book, they provided the angst and they also provided the little light relieve that broke up the pacey anticipation of the book – I had a few chuckles a time or two and some character just the mention of their names brought on a smile.

This book had a clear structure to it and it is without a doubt a show case to Ms.Tyler's talent – I certainly hope there is a book three to this series… as the Men Of Alaska are just about heating up.

Review - Brilliant Disguise - J.L. Wilson

Title: Brilliant Disguise

Author: J.L .Wilson

Publisher: Respendence Publishing

Main Characters: Nick Baxter & Shannon Delgardie

An undercover FBI agent in a tiny Iowa town finds you can't hide anything from a woman who's determined to find out the truth...

Nick Baxter, an undercover FBI agent, thinks his BRILLIANT DISGUISE will fool the hicks in New Providence, Iowa. They won't suspect he's there investigating widow Shannon Delgardie, under suspicion of treason. What Nick doesn't know is that everybody in town is conspiring to protect her and investigate him in return.

Shannon needs help. The men her late husband blackmailed are closing in and the FBI might be involved. When Nick approaches her, can she trust him? With the aid of computer hackers and hair stylists, she uncovers the truth, finding a love she never expected in a tiny Iowa town.

Shit, Nick thought. The job. He was supposed to be doing his job. He was supposed to be getting that stupid computer. He wasn’t supposed to be worrying about how soon he can peel off Shannon’s clothes. I’m not supposed to be looking for some side road where I can pull over and kiss her until we both feel blinded. My job, Nick repeated doggedly. I’m supposed to do my job. The job. Think about the job.

They drove the thirty miles to Cedar Rapids where Shannon gave him directions to one of her favorite restaurants. When they finally pulled into the parking lot, Nick was more in control than he’d been for the last hour. Then he turned off the engine and looked at her. Once again, he was swamped by lust and the absolute need to touch her. “Quit looking at me like that.” His hands went to her waist.

“Like what?”

“Like you want me to kiss you.”

“I do,” she admitted.

Her lips parted under his and with a small moan, he drew her to him, his hands moving over her back and then delving into the waistband of her jeans. He got one hand under her blouse and Nick groaned again when he felt her silky, warm skin. His mind turned to mush. All he could think about was the feel of her tongue, her skin and the sensation of falling, the feeling of touching, tasting and wanting.

Nick nuzzled at her neck, his tongue flicking over her collarbone then moving into the hollow at the base of her neck. She shivered as he breathed on her skin. “I don’t think I’ll ever view parking lots in quite the same way,” he said as she slowly pushed away from him and ran her hands through her hair. The long, shaggy style gave her a tousled, just awakened, look. “You’re so beautiful.” He caressed her face with the back of his hand.

To his surprise, Shannon looked flustered. “I don’t think so. But thanks for saying it.” She kissed him again, a lingering, sweet kiss before she pulled away. “Come on, let’s eat.”

Review

Nick Baxter, a FBI agent at the end of his career, has a job to do, investigate the widow Delgardie. Nick had it all planned, accidentally meet the widow, turn on the charm and presto he should have her eating out of his hands. Not all plans goes as planned, little did Nick know that the widow Delgardie comes as a package deal.

Shannon Delgardie, has come home to New Providence, Iowa, not only to lick her wounds after a disappointing marriage, but also to do her own investigation when she starts getting blackmailed by email. When the FBI turns up to do their own investigation, she is already one step ahead of them.

New Providence, Iowa is not surprised by the high jinks of Shannon; after all they have known her all her life. However when the new comer starts asking question, small town inventiveness kicks in, but will Nick find a ways to gain their trust in order to help Shannon, and will Shannon get over her distrust in time to help the people she loves.

An absolutely hilarious read, if you like nosy friends, over eager alpha male and a mum that has more up her sleeves than sleeves, you will love J.L. Wilson’s BRILLIANT DISGUISE.

Nick a FBI agent on the last few months of his career is sent on what should be a fairly simple operation, he is however out manoeuvred at every turn, by literally everyone in New Providence. When he finally meets Shannon, she brings out more in him, than just the need to overhaul her hard drive.

Shannon is well equipped to deal with Nick; however as a woman with little faith in the power of trust, she enjoys the length at which he will go to get the information he needs from her, while she makes up her mind if he is worth everything she has to give.

Ms. Wilson’s New Providence is full of small town quirks and familiar rituals. The locals are loyal, argumentative and gets up to more than even the FBI gives them credit for. I absolutely fell in love with the town and I for one regretted having to leave.

Review – A Strong Hand – Catt Ford

Title: A Strong Hand

Author: Catt Ford

Publisher: Dreamspinner Press

Main Characters: Nicholas Sayers & Damian Wolfe

Nicholas Sayers, needing money for college, takes a job as assistant to infamous photographer Damian Wolfe. It's just taking pictures, right? Wrong. While Nick has never questioned what kind of man he is or what he truly wants in life, working for Damian during a BDSM photo shoot opens his eyes to all sorts of sexual possibilities, and many of them include the handsome Mr. Wolfe. Damian has serious doubts about getting involved with a younger man who knows nothing about the BDSM lifestyle, but Nick's adventurous and humorous approach to new experiences is far too alluring to resist. Although he knows it might be a mistake, Damian takes Nick into his life. Flirting on the edges of control, submission, and pain excites Nick more than he would have ever dreamed possible. With Damian, Nick learns about his own deeply hidden desires and finds out that relinquishing control doesn’t make him weak—having someone else in control of his sexual pleasure simply heightens it. And the reverse is true for Damian: Control turns him on. So they set out to explore these sensual boundaries together, neither expecting to find love along the way.

Review

World renown photographer Damian Wolfe is on a job as a favour and at this point he’s actually wondering why the hell he is even there. Not that the catalogue he’s doing the shot for isn’t something to be appreciated – but with a very eager friend looking over his shoulder to top that off he has an accident prone assistant – he’s now making use of all the patience he’s built up over the years.

Nicholas Sayers is the accident prone assistant in question – working his way through school, he takes a job to help with the layout and some manual job for the photographer, at not time did he question what or who was being photographed. Seeing the tools of the BDSM trade so to speak up close and personal brings out Nick’s exploratory nature, which is not a bad thing but it lures Damian in as nothing else could  - because Nick was also an accident waiting to happen he needs to be taken into hand and Damien as reluctant as he is has the strongest hand that Nick needs.

What a rush this book was, not only was I reintroduced to Ms. Ford’s voice but this was a book that I really enjoyed. The protags were the book  – irrespective of what other brilliance this book had to offer, Damien with his lone wolf approach to life and his reluctant mannerism was a class act, Nick was sweet – literally candy, innocent to so much more than his natural instinct – he however cannot resist what he was born for even if he knew not what he was about to get into.

The plot was a wonderful event – because this is how it felt. There was fear, there was naivety, there was reliance as well as good old smut. The emotional aspect of this book is wrapped tightly around the smut bit of this book. Damien is having to face some home truths and as much as he eventually mans up to what will eventually be his responsibility, it’s refreshing to see his self doubt, his crushing fear of doing the wrong thing and his elation at knowing that he has made the most important person in his life shine.

For readers new to the whole BDSM scene this is the book for you. I was impressed with how Ms. Ford handled Nick’s character as well as the side cast that just by there action made both positive and negative impression on a fresh face Nick. Nick is the star of this show however and I was with him every step of the way – at no point did I think he could not  handle anything dished out to him or put in any uncomfortable situation  - I thought the introduction to the scenes were quite tastefully done.

There was a good balance with quite a bit of the book, As much as the book concentrated on the softer element of the lifestyle – there was a really eye opening scene that I felt was well placed and well time. The personalities also were well placed and they provided the sometime hilarious angst that gave the book a more rounded feel.

For fans of Ms. Ford work – not to be missed, seriously. New reader Ms. Ford is a voice you will be adding to your list.

Review – Heartless – Diana Palmer

Title: Heartless

Author: Diana Palmer

Publisher: HQN

Main Characters: Gracie & Jason

Gracie thinks she's lost Jason forever. But when danger threatens her and the ranch, she can only hope that her long, tall Texan will come blazing home to save her, despite her secrets—and take control of Comanche Wells, and her heart, once and for all.

 Review

Ms Palmer gives us yet another book from her Comanche Wells series of books, this time it’s Gracie and Jason who are facing cupids arrow. Gracie is the stepsister that Jason has always taken care of and protect at every turn. Over time they both have grown and taken up different interest and for all intense and purposes live in two different homes, Jason lives on the ranch and rarely comes in to town unless he NEEDS to, while Gracie  who is the organiser and perfect host of the family has no problem staying in the more populous area of town.

With one kiss their perfect harmony was tossed into chaos and this set about a chain of events that soon has Gracie on the outs with Jason and out of a home as well. Jason has not come out of the affray scratch free – but he has to shoulder most of the blame as Gracie has her secrets as well and she will make every effort to keep them a secret even if it means letting go of Jason, a Jason she is fast falling in love with.

The latest production from Diana Palmer and yet another book that  I got as soon as it was released. it doesn’t matter that  I knew the ending as soon as I began or that the cast are quite formulaic – this is Diana Palmer and  it’s a must read.

There are no grey areas to this book and every thing was tastefully done with the stepsister/brother explanation. The support cast are past books protags and this book does have a bit of pace to it to make it an all nighter for me..

Loved it.

Weekly Geek - Why Haven't I Read This Yet?

I think just about every reader has a least one book that they've been meaning to read for awhile (months or even years) but, for one reason or another, they just haven't gotten around to it. Maybe it's a book a friend recommended last year, or a title you've flirted with in a bookstore on more than one occasion, or maybe it's a book that's sitting right there on your bookshelf, patiently waiting for you to pick it up -- but the thought is always there, in the back of your mind: Why haven't I read this yet?
This week, tell us about a book (or books) you have been meaning to read. What is it? How long have you wanted to read it? And, why haven't you read it yet?

This weeks WG ask about the book/s that we have been meaning to read and haven’t gotten to yet, firstly any reader worth his or her salt will have a To Be Read Pile a mile long, a To be Bought Pile probably hoping to get some funds to splurge on, a pile you are hiding from and a pile that you want to to re-read sometime in the near future and I fall into all the category above.

There are so much books I have that I want to start reading and still haven’t gotten around to it….

Just a few are

Cassandra Clare

Mortal Instruments Trilogy

Women who Changed The world

Fifty inspirational women who shaped history

Karin Slaughter

Fracture

What’s the book right off the top of your head that you have been pushing to the back of the pile for a while now…

Review – Anthology: Friction – Maximum Exposure – Jenna Byrnes & Jude Mason

Title: Anthology: Friction – Maximum Exposure

Author: Jenna Byrnes & Jude Mason

Publisher: Total E-bound

Main Characters: Rob Jenkins & Max

A secret pleasure denied could be the end for long time lovers Rob and Max, or will mistrust do it first?

Rob Jenkins is worried. The relationship he's been in for six years has become a little stale and not very intimate. He loves Max more than anything, but the man's sexual fetish of 'doing things' in public never interested him.
While Max is away at a two-week business conference, Rob concludes that in order to save their relationship, he needs to make some choices. He surprises Max with a weekend visit and the offer to play a 'game'. Will the sexy scenarios be enough, or will they merely expose the flaws in their relationship?

Rob Jenkins climbed into the back seat of the yellow cab and took the first deep, calming breath since he’d gotten off the plane in Chicago. Collecting his suitcase had been a nightmare, as the crowd of meandering travellers at Midway Airport seemed determined to get in his way at every turn.

All the time he’d been dodging kids and dazed adults hurrying from one place to the next, he’d had Max on his mind. Their fights, the lack of intimacy plaguing them of late and his own refusal to play naughty with the man he loved. He shifted uncomfortably, remembering the last time Max had tried to get him to ‘show off his goods’. They’d been at one of the local clubs, drinking and partying it up after a long week of work, when Max slid a hand into Rob’s pants, giving his cock a stealthy squeeze. Of course, Rob had gotten an erection. But fear of discovery and ridicule had cooled his ardour almost immediately. Max had been upset, and the evening had ended with them in silent accusatorial anger and frustration.

The cabbie interrupted his thoughts. “Where to?” he asked in a heavily accented voice.

Rob looked up and saw the man’s dark eyes in the rear view mirror. “The Mason Arms on Michigan Avenue.”

He knew the ride would take about twenty minutes in good traffic. He’d thought about the flight from Indiana, the taxi ride and his other plans a million times before finally deciding to join his lover. Being away from him for the whole two weeks of Max’s conference seemed like a bad idea right now.

“You attending that big software convention at the Arms?” The cabbie made small talk as he pulled into traffic, smoothly accelerating.

“Meeting a friend.” Rob wasn’t in a talkative mood and hoped his clipped reply would shut the guy up. It did, and Rob fell back into his thoughts about Max and the argument they’d had before Max had left—another misfired sexual episode, another denial on Rob’s part—a fiasco extraordinaire.

He shuddered. He knew something had to change. Max needed those risqué moments Rob kept denying him.

Friction: Maximum Exposure © Byrnes & Mason

Reviewette

Rob is on his way to surprise his partner Max – not that he knew if he would be welcomed, but because he knew he had to do something to put the spark back into their relationship.

He and Max has been together for too long to not make this work – but with Max’s panache for wanting to get his groove on in the eyes of the public, things are not going so well, as that is not Rob’s style. Rob is however committed to finding a middle ground for their problem and so he is making the first step.

Max is elated to see Rob and his open minded to meeting Rob half way in resolving what to him is just a glitch. More than just their willingness/reluctance to make the best of the weekend comes to light however and Rob is placed in a position of wondering if it’s not better to cut his lose whilst he’s ahead of the game – the ball is now in Max’s court.

MAXIMUM EXPOSURE is a part of the Fiction Anthology and I paused for a day or two to put this review together. First off this is a short story – don't know the page count, but fairly short, the plus about this this book is that it is centered around a period of time when a relationship is losing it’s gleam – for one or more reasons.

The protags Rob and Max feels so real – they fear, they strut, they have doubts and one is scared of losing the most important thing his life and the other falls prey to the usual workplace angst, I could so relate to this. The language just rolls with the plot – and there is a sense of growth with this book. It’s short but packs a hells of a punch.

As I said it took two days to get this on paper because firstly this book highlights the fact that sometimes you have to take a risk to have it all, secondly It show that weakness is not necessarily a bad thing – it could be the strongest feature of a relationship. Everything goes quickly and there is nice balance between wanting and doing everything for the sake preserving a relationship.

Once again I can’t say enough about the style Byrnes and Mason brings to each and every book they do together, and as I said as well I feel maturity in this script – it feels more solid than the other books I have read by them, I am looking forward to where they go from here.

This the first Anthology that I have read every single story and that was all based on the quality of MAXIMUM EXPOSURE.

Review – Desire, Oklahoma 4: Rules Of Desire – Leah Brooke

Back of the Book

Erin Robinson moved to Desire, Oklahoma to be with her pregnant sister, unprepared for the dynamics of her new home. Menage and Dom/sub relationships prevail in a town where the men protect their women at all costs.

Men had always been more trouble than they were worth. Erin can't imagine trying to put up with any man. Three would be impossible! But the men in Desire are different than any she has ever known. How can she resist men who earn her respect and aren't the least bit intimidated by her temper?
When someone tries to kill her, Jared, Duncan and Reese Preston scramble to protect her. At the same time, they're determined to show her just how good having three men in her bed can be.

"I love the town of Desire, Oklahoma. The men are strong and chauvinistic, but completely irresistible. Exploring the different personalities of each resident and their take on relationships is a lot of fun. I hope readers enjoy reading about Desire as much as I enjoy writing about it." ~ Leah ~

Duncan had been the one to really throw her off kilter. She’d met him at the club, of all places.
Club Desire, a BDSM club in town, was owned by Blade Royal, Royce Harley, and King Taylor. The men
from Desire met there for a variety of reasons that Erin didn’t want to think about. They hung out there quite
a bit and offered each other support regarding the lifestyles they lived.
Erin had gone along when Kelly, Blade’s new wife, had helped Rachel sneak in. Boone and Chase had been
fighting their need for her sister and had gone to the club to avoid her. Rachel wouldn’t tolerate that and had
talked Erin into sneaking into the club with her.
Jared, Duncan, and Reese had been playing cards with Boone and Chase when they’d walked in. She’d
carefully avoided looking at them. Instead she’d strained to see who’d been making all the noise on the other
side of the room. Erin couldn’t believe it when she saw Law and Zach Tyler, two more of Desire’s men who
liked to share, in the corner with their hands all over a naked woman. She’d made some flip remark to Rachel,
asking about having sex with two men.
Before she could react, a steel band had wrapped around her waist from behind and a hand had covered her
eyes. The hot wall of muscle against her back had caused a riot of sensation to shoot through her. Her body
tightened in need, her breasts swelling, hot where they’d rested on the arm wrapped around her. She’d been
amazed to feel her panties dampen. A low voice at her ear had made her tremble even more. “How would
you like to find out what it’s like with three men?”
Her body’s overwhelming response to his whispered words had shaken her to the core and it had taken every
ounce of self control not to let it show. Not until they got outside and the hand over her eyes had been removed did she get her first close up look at Duncan, who still had her pulled firmly back against him.
Just as handsome and compelling as his brothers, Duncan had an intensity that hadn’t been leashed as tightly
as Jared’s. He also didn’t have Reese’s carefree attitude. Direct and volatile, Duncan made her hot as hell.
Erin carefully avoided all three of them now as much as possible, unable to get over the tumultuous effect
each had on her.
“There you are.”

Rules Of Desire © Leah Brooke

Review

Erin is still in small town Desire after originally coming there to see that her sister was settled and happy with her two men – she has now moved there herself. With Desire the town of Ménage and Dom/ Sub relationships she is way out of her element – because Erin has never had any interest in the male population as she has always had too much on her plate.

Three men of Desire has taken a shine to Erin and she is not happy – she has problem thinking the maintenance of a relationship with one man is difficult she fails to see how a relationship with three men will work. Desire however does not operate on that basis and she soon finds herself under Jared, Duncan and Reese Preston protection  because someone is clearly out for Erin and that is one thing that not only the town will not put up with but her three men has just about gone feral in their zest to protect her.

Erin feels she is more than capable of taking of herself – so the threat literally slides off her back, she is more concern about the fact that three men are determined to make her their own and she is scared but finds herself caught between a rock and three hard bodies

I love small town Desire –  I wish someone would pack me away and ship me there – no return address. Who wouldn’t love a town where the men are literally falling off the tree in bunches of two’s and three’s and only one woman get to keep the lucky, sexy bunch of men.

Jared, Duncan and Reese are sexy, dripping hot and as arrogant as you can get – they have set their sights on Erin to be their own and they were not backing down. When dangers literally comes a calling they wrap her up in cotton wool. Erin has always been the independent sort and does not take kindly to this sensual manhandling – no matter what her body says.

The three brothers know what they want, they have always known and they have lived their lives with the expectation of finding that one woman – after meeting Erin they all knew this was no flash in the pan attraction and they go in for the kill the first chance they get. However before they can make any decent inroad in forming a bond – they have to battle whatever danger that is following Erin as well as Erin herself, because she is the biggest risk to the survival of their relationship.

I love the third book in the Desire, Oklahoma series – RULES OF DESIRE not only deals with another ménage forming but give a bit more of the structure of the town of Desire. Ms. Brooke’s does not let up on any of the detail of the angst that these four protags go through – I really liked the fact that she tackles some of the straight forward stuff like jealousy, trust, acceptance and honesty in this book – I can clearly see alot of thought and some level of objectivity went into this book. I was impressed.

I wont elaborate on the smut – Let me just say there was smut and a healthy amount of it and  I LOVE IT!

All the old faces makes an appearance – and catch up is done on relationships to ensure I understood who was doing what to whom and who had a torch burning for who. The funny moment were few and far between but I cracked up when they appeared – nice touch.

The built up of the danger and the fear factor not only tied the plot together, but was nicely done  I thought, so well done in fact that the who done it didn’t really live up to the anticipation that Ms. Brooke wrapped the book in. It was over before I could blink – that however took nothing away from how good this book was – I am loving Ms. Brooke’s voice in RULES OF DESIRE and can’t wait for the next book in the Desire, Oklahoma series.
