Discussion Point – Have you Started Rounding Up 2009

Am I wrong to be pushing for the end of the year to get here and be over with already. Not only am I scared to death of the maniacs that come out during the yuletide season, all under the guise of ‘buying presents for loved”, but I am so ready to start the year afresh on my blog.

Going around the net this past few weeks there seems to be  quiet buss in the air of new things to come, new paths to cross, new mountains to scale and new ways to lively up the world of blogging.

My challenges are my main blog concern at the moment – At the beginning of the year I knew I had the time to read this year – so I set myself a target of 450 books to get through and to be honest I am doing really well ( I have about 37 to do)– but I am ready for the challenges to be done and packed away now. This New Year - no more, I will instead be hosting a challenge – so watch this space.

Have you guys even given a thought of what you will be doing on your blog after the New Year, or is it playing it by the seat of your pants to the same old rules.

For me it’s all about time management,  I will definitely be doing alot of scheduled post and trying to visit a few more blogs than I am doing at the moment. I have a few new features that I hope will take off and of course I will be pimping out as much books as I possible can…

How has the year so far been for you

Given any thoughts to what you will be doing new year…

and Are you having fun yet in blogland

Did I Just Discover Pet Peeve

I read those final pages and my eyebrows where so far up my skull people might've wondered if I had a facelift gone wrong. I was going WTF? This is it? Really? Grabbed the flatcover that was provided by the author, thinking perhaps I got it wrong and that it was Paranormal Suspense but there on the spine it said: Paranormal Romance.

Leontine, you're not alone. I've definitely been misled by the labeling of a book a time or two and it's never a pleasant experience. For example, Jory Strong's GHOSTLAND was labeled Fantasy Romance but I read it more as erotic fantasy with little to no romance. In fact, if the book had been labeled an erotic novel, I think I would have liked it more but like you, I was too busy searching for the romance. I mean where the hell is it??!!

Seeking My Inner kink

Although BDSM is not my thing, I’m not at all opposed to the whole Dom/sub relationship and or even turned off by it.  It’s just not the kind of erotica I usually seek out.  But after reading Bound to Please by Lilli Feisty, and Laid Bare by Lauren Dane, I’ve come to realize that a little light BDSM reading can take me a long way. I’ve even begun to wonder--if I were going to indulge in a Dom/sub relationship--would I be the Dom…or the sub?

I think we would totally suck at this! I mean - seriously! If you can't stop laughing while you're spanking a dude wearing a diaper then WHAT THE HELL, YO?

I'm just sayin'.

Negative Reactions to Book Reviews (Part II)

I just got my first negative feedback from an author. A book I reviewed last month and didn't give a good rating because the book misrepresented what it was about and was just not a good book. The author mailed me a letter, telling me I was unprofessional, he only gets 4 and 5 star reviews and he wanted me to remove the review from my site. I have not responded nor removed the review and don't intend to. I'm sorry he doesn't agree with my take but I gave an honest review and don't feel like I should have to retract it because he doesn't like it. I also don't feel like I owe him a reply, as that would just open the door to more pointless back and forth. While I understand his discomfort with the review, if what he states in his letter is true then he has plenty of others willing to write what he wants.

I don't really feel obligated - I went into reviewing with the idea that I was going to be honest, and I have. I have only given negative reviews for 2 books, but tried to say something good - one author handled it graciously, the other did not.

To me, I feel more pressured to be totally honest, than pressured to just give it a good review - people who read my review could be influenced to buy, or not to buy, so I want to be honest for the reader - that is what I feel pressured about.

Religion In Paranormal Romance

So today’s topic is about the concept of religion in the Paranormal Romance world. I always find it really interesting to see how various Paranormal authors treat the subject of God and Religion in their writing.

I am going to be very careful here and not discuss my own religious views or my opinions on the subject or my opinions on the ways various authors handle it in their books. I am nothing if not completely open minded.

Ooh, very interesting topic today, Rebecca. I think that writers of paranormal (romance or otherwise) actually encounter the dilemma of religion much more frequently than writers of other secular genres. Part of the reason for this is that most religions reject those paranormal tropes and ideas out of hand. Then the writers have to decide how their characters would handle this, or if it is even an issue for them to consider or not. It creates an interesting paradox.
I do think religion has a place in paranormal romance--if it is something that the characters, themselves, would be concerned with. However, as with any romance, if it isn't integral to either the characters or the plot, I would think its inclusion would be superfluous.

You are already thinking of next year?!!!! If I were smart I'd have like a flow chart or something, alas I'm a fly by the seat of my pants kind of gal.

Hmm I get that author's books are a personal reflection of their work + blood sweat and tears BUT they must understand that when you give a book for a review the reviewer may have some criticism. As a person that hates to received criticism of any kind I get the author's side - as a blogger a 4 star rating is awesome so I'm not really sure why that would mean negative...

I'm looking forward to the craziness of the holiday season to be over but haven't really got any plans for the new year.

I'd love to do new things on my blog but don't know what yet. I guess I'll be flying by the seat of my pants until then, lol. :D

I have already been pondering on my top (number) lists have three challenges to participate in next year. As for new things, well, I finally have a feeling I have set a few things up I want to follow through on and true to my nature, I will do things on impulse or spirit of the moment. You've made me very curious what kind of challenge you're setting up EH :)

Hey K.C.

Yup, I am starting to look ahead already - I am all about ending this year already...

It's just been too long, too much drama and trauma...

Ring in the New Year already....

*** I know what you mean about negative review - and to be honest reviews are subjective - one person will always hate a body of work, no matter how acclaim as a master piece it is...

Hey Leontine..

Unfortunately for me - I am not a impulse person and Like to plot and plan things in advance - so I am getting my duck in a row and If all else fail, I have a great blog - so it's still nice to fly by the seat of my pants and enjoy it...

Yup I am hosting one challenge this year - I am hoping to have the post up soon - I will only say - it's all about the smut...

LOL
