Title: Mating

Author: Lex Valentine

Publisher: Freya’s Bower Presents

Main Character:  Roul Verlaine & Morgan Kale

As the pack Alpha, Roul Verlaine always looked out for his twin brother Ranulf. Now, Ran's mated and run off to New York City. Deciding to check up on his twin, Roul hires the Watcher Agency to follow Ran and his new mate. But when Roul arrives at Watcher, the owner is not what he expected. Morgan Kale is a rare white werewolf, a lone wolf. She's not looking for a mate so when Roul walks into her office, and her senses start pinging, she's not exactly happy about it. With Roul only in New York for three days, Morgan has to decide whether to tell him they are mates...or let him walk out of her life forever.

“The danger of staring too long at a sigil is that it can leech away your control.”

The woman’s voice tore Roul’s gaze from the magical diamond-shaped mark that famous wizard artist Nick Diamond used to sign his paintings. A woman with long, blonde hair stood in the doorway. Her eyes met his easily, and he realized she must be at least six feet tall. Then her scent slammed into him like a Mac truck: rosemary . . . and lemon. Sweet, spicy, tangy . . . his mind and his cock reacted in the same millisecond to her scent.

Mine!

The woman’s elegant brows flicked up, and with a fierce growl, his wolf roused. Possessiveness filled every atom of his body, and he wondered briefly if the magic of the painting had gotten to him. Gods, he wanted her! All rational thought fled his brain, leaving behind only primal urges. Driven by his base needs, he promised himself that before dawn lit the sky, he would have her beneath him, moaning in supplication.

A sardonic expression settled on her elegant features, almost as if she’d heard his arrogant thoughts. “I can see I’m way too late with my warning about control,” she murmured, her lips curling in amusement.

Roul knew his hard cock blatantly strained the front of his jeans, but he didn’t care. His wolf wanted her to see how she aroused him. “I’m Roul Verlaine,” he said in a voice husky with lust.

The woman stepped toward him. “I know. I’m Morgan Kale. Welcome to New York.” She held out one elegant hand.

Shock rippled through him. He’d thought the head of the Watcher Agency was a man. Her eyebrows arched up, and she gazed at him. Again, her expression gave him the sense that she’d heard his thoughts. “Are you an empath? A telepath?” he asked abruptly, setting his suitcase down, and extending his hand toward hers.

Her polite smile became a wide grin. “I wish. It would make my work much easier.” Her palm met his and she shook his hand firmly, but briefly. Her fingers dropped away, and she gestured toward the office door. “Please come in.”

Her touch unnerved him even more than the persistent notion that she could read his thoughts. Despite her assertion that she was neither empath nor telepath, Roul’s instincts told him to shield his thoughts like he often did with his twin brother. A woman like this one—professional, capable—wouldn’t give him the time of day if she had heard his arrogant thoughts about having her beneath him before dawn.

Review

Roul Vetaine is in New York to check up on his baby brother who just happen to be his twin and also happens to be in a flash mating scenario. Just wanting to know that his brother is not being lead around by the nose – he hire Morgan Kale of Watcher Agency to find out if the relationship is as solid as it should be.

Needless to say Roul comes up on surprise after surprise during his stay and the main one of note is the fact that Morgan is not who he expects and the instant attraction he feels for her is something he aim to follow through on.

I can’t go any further with the details without giving it all away, because this is a short read.  I was attracted to the book by the cover and I was not disappointed in the neither plot nor the main protags themselves.

Ms. Valentines give just the right amount of detail to tease and hold my interest.  Roul and Morgan are wolves and both are at different places in their lives with a whole lot of baggage on both side to content so – so the idea of a mating is pushed under the carpet by one and not even thought of by the other and this is the crust of the problem. Being an alpha Roul is definately not one to back down from what he wants and he knows he wants Morgan, however Morgan has always considered different and has the experience to go with it – someone has to give because finding middle ground with those kind off odds are not looking good.

I am liking this captivation voice and have already picked a few other books by Ms. Valentine. a new to me author but definately one I will be looking out for in the future.

Title: Sweet Reunion

Author: Shawn Lane

Publisher: Amber Quill

Main Characters:  Jason Sweet & Danny Yarrow

Retired from the police force after a tragic shooting, Jason Sweet hasn’t been back to his hometown, Sutter’s Bay, for fifteen years. With his mother’s final days approaching, Jason returns to make peace with his mother and his past. Part of that past includes former best friend and lover, Danny Yarrow.

Danny’s satisfied with his life as a drama teacher at the local high school, but the one thing missing is the love of a good man. He’s only too happy to be reunited with Jason. They’ve both grown and changed since their broken teenaged relationship. Jason hasn’t had an easy time of it since leaving Sutter’s Bay, but Danny intends to convince his friend and former lover that when it comes to taking chances, their love is worth it.

He forced a smile. “Hey, Ma.”
She smiled back. “Hi, honey. Did you have a nice visit with
Danny?”
“Yeah. Actually, Ma, I invited him over to have dinner with us
tonight. Is that okay? I can tell him not to come if it’s too much.”
His mother shook her head. “Don’t be silly. I like Danny. It’s
nice that you’re trying to get reacquainted.”
Jason nodded. “You want to sit out on the back porch for a
little bit? I can bring you a cup of tea and we can just sit there and
enjoy the breeze.”
“Oh, yes, that would be wonderful, Jason.”
He scooped her up in his arms, making sure to take the blanket
with her. Her arms wrapped around his neck. She didn’t weigh
much more than a puppy. His heart twisted.
It should have been a breeze to carry her outside, but with his
messed up leg, carrying her to the sliding glass door and out to the
covered porch made him break out in a sweat. He winced and set
her down on a cushy lounger they’d set up for her earlier.
She studied his face when he pulled back. “I’m sorry. You
should have made me walk out here.”
“I’m all right.”
“You are not. That hurt.”
He sighed. “Yeah, it did. But watching you try to make it out
here yourself hurts more.” He sat on the edge of the lounger,
straightening his leg out before him. Jason closed his hands over
hers. “Do you hate me for the years we’ve missed?”
“No, never.” She turned her palm up and squeezed his hand
with as much strength as she could manage. “Your father—”

Review

Looking at the school where Daniel Yarrow now teaches drama, retired police officer Jason Sweet knows he has unfinished business with him and there is no time like the present to make the first move.

Jason is back in his home town to spend time with his dying mother and after fifteen years away he is doing the decent thing and closing another chapter of his life that he literally ran out on years ago.

The meeting with Daniel goes smoother than Jason anticipated and before long he is unburdening a whole lot of baggage on Daniels shoulders, but Daniel is man enough to take it, having been around the block a time or two himself. Daniel has never really gotten over Jason and with Jason now in arms reach he just hopes he is on the same page as he is.

Although Jason is home to make peace with his mom hooking up with Daniel is rather a special event for him, but now fifteen years older and a whole lot wiser grabbing the quick pleasure is not his style anymore.

I consider this book a Shawn Lane filler, short, to the point and not really enough page time to jump up and get crazy about. The plot is rather heavy and I thought Ms. Lane dealt with Jason’s relationship with his mother and his childhood with a sort of quite grace and this feels like a more subtle voice that I have not experienced with her before, not that I am not used to Ms. Lane writing very thought provoking matter – but with SWEET REUNION she just goes a bit slower, letting everything, every moment, every memory  sink in and I quite liked it.

Daniel’s and Jason’s relationship was tied up in alot of respect with what was happening in the Sweet’s household and separating the two was nicely down by Ms. Lane so I could see the relationship between the boys now men and yet still I was able to maintain a cloud of righteous indignation because of what was happening in the Sweet’s household over the years.

Fan of Shawn Lane without a doubt a must – new reader I would probably look through this authors repertoire of books and go with something lighter and then build up, because she is like fine wine, she grows on you.
