Review – Dalakis Passion Bk1 – Harker’s Journey – N.J. Walters

Back Of the Book

Johanna Harker's life changed drastically on her eighteenth birthday—she received a copy of Bram Stoker's Dracula, discovered her fascination with vampires, and experienced her first of many hot, erotic dreams featuring a tall, dark and mysterious man. For the next thirteen years, on the full moon, Johanna's dream lover appeared. Sometimes his lovemaking was playful and tender, other times passionate and raw.
When no flesh-and-blood man can compete with her dream lover, Johanna puts all her energy into her job and studying vampires. Then she is sent to the fabled Carpathian Mountains of Transylvania to meet her company's largest client, the mysterious and demanding Cristofor Dalakis.
Cristofor, the enigmatic and formidable patriarch of the Dalakis family, plans to use his every skill to seduce and possess Johanna. But Cristofor is harboring a dark family secret that will challenge all that Johanna has known and believed.

Tucked upstairs in the far corner of her parent’s home in an older suburb of Chicago, her childhood bedroom was shrouded in darkness, lit only by the glow of the full moon that poured through the open window. The sheer white curtains fluttered in the breeze as she rolled over in bed and gazed out at the night. One moment she was alone, and the next, he was there, standing in the shadows at the end of the bed. She was not afraid of his presence, but rather, she had been waiting for him.

He advanced towards her, his movements fluid and graceful. She gasped as a beam of moonlight illuminated his features. Striking and dangerous were the two words that popped into her head. Dressed entirely in black, his great height and massive shoulders almost immediately blocked out all the light. As if sensing her need to see him better, he turned slightly so she could make out his features.

Long dark hair was swept back from his face, falling in a curtain of silk around his shoulders. His forehead was prominent, and his cheekbones were high. Quirked in a half smile, his lips were thin, yet surprisingly sensual. For a moment, his eyes seemed to glow an eerie red before fading to dark once again. As much as she strained, she could not make out their color.

“Green.” His deep, slightly accented voice answered her unasked question.

She felt his voice for it seemed to vibrate deep inside her, causing her to yearn for something. What that craving was, she wasn’t sure, but she longed to hear him speak again.

“Sit, please.” Scooting over to the center of the bed, she patted the white duvet next to her.

A satisfied smile crossed his face as he sank to the mattress. He said nothing and sat as still as a stone. Predator. The word flashed in her head and a deep fear rose within her as her heart began to pound in her chest.

His dark laughter filled the air, and one of his large hands covered her fluttering heart. The heat from his palm seared her chest. She wanted to move, but she was paralyzed by fear. His green-eyed gaze captured hers and she could not tear away from their terrible beauty. For a moment, she thought she was dead and lamented the fact that there were so many things left in life that she wanted to do.

As the thought flashed through her mind, his face took on such a look of pain and sorrow that she would have done anything he’d asked of her if it would alleviate his torment. She’d never seen such a look of anguish, and for a brief moment, she experienced the deep suffering of his very soul.

“You are the one.” His voice was laced with surprise and what sounded like hope. He sat back and pulled his hand away, holding it fisted in his lap. Johanna felt the loss keenly. It was almost as if he had taken her heart with him.

“The one what?” she whispered.

Review

Johanna Harker is in Bram Stokers part of the world for a job, but she was not letting that tamper her excitement for the place that she has wished of coming to every since was eighteen.

The task was easy enough – meet with her companies biggest client and get him to sign some papers and that should be that.  With how Johanna’s life has played out for the past decade she shouldn’t has expected things to go smoothly. From the day she met the man of her dreams – literally in her dream she has lived for the moments they are and can be together. Meeting him in the flesh in the Carpathian Mountains was definately a turn for the worst in Johanna’s books.

Cristofor Dalakis is the head of his family, he’s the biggest client for Johanna’s firm and he is a demanding man in all things – excepts when it comes to Johanna. He’s waited a long time for her, and now she was on his turf, they both have to make some decisions, some however are harder than most.

I decided to try a new vampi series, but nothing that makes me want to cart it around in my bag for a day or two. I just wanted a straight forward, one sitting read and I was not disappointed with HARKER’S JOURNEY.

The first in the Dalakis Passion series HARKER’S JOURNEY is the opening tale into the world of the Dalakis brothers that will eventually make up the other books. The main thrust of this book however deals with Johanna and Cristofor real life meeting after meeting in her dreams for the past decade.

I have always been a fan of Ms. Walters and her series never fails to impress me. I was a little tentative about starting this as there is such a predictable feel to the blurb, I could see where it was going, I could see it before I opened the book. This was my one assumption about this book and one I won’t make again – it was brilliant.

A fairly short read – but the pace, the excitement, the sense that something has happened, something is about to happen sucked me right in and I am so going with it.

Johanna wasn’t so bad, she had a spine and she had some moves when it comes to getting her groove on. Cristofor was all alpha male and bloody sexy with it. The little bits of angst in the book was  just to the point and gelled the story together nicely. I really like this minimalistic opening book – nothing was wasted and  I am already opening the second book in the series.

The setting of the book in the Carpathian Mountains was a nice touch i thought, as it reflected the natural nature of these changeling that I am getting the feeling they are a force to be reckoned with and am so along for the ride.
