Review – Furtive Liaison – Amanda Young

The Blurb

A "quickie" is all Shawn Delaney wants when he meets Marc Wright at a XXX bookstore. Instead, he discovers instant, explosive chemistry with a man with whom he has nothing in common. The last thing he wants is a long-term relationship with anyone, much less an impulsive guy sporting chipped black nail polish.

To a workaholic like Shawn, "love" is a four-letter word, until Marc strolls into his life and turns it upside down in the best way possible. And for the first time in his life, Shawn isn’t concentrating on work.

But the discovery of a simple yellow rubber ducky in Marc’s luggage sends Shawn on a downward spiral of confusion about his lover's history and fidelity, and eventually, it leads to heartbreak. Has their entire relationship been nothing more than the illusion of happiness, or could there be more to Marc’s betrayal than meets the eye?

The Review

Characters.

Marc Wright  – Goth or Business man, Saint or Sinner . A man looking for a little satisfaction now that all he has left is what he has had to make alot of sacrifices for.

Shawn Delaney– The man who is known for hitting and running, and not interested in getting further than mutual satisfaction. He however is not blind to a good thing, but curiosity kills the cat and Shawn is not anything if not curious.

The plot

When Shawn Delaney hooked up with Marc Wright, all he was looking for was a quickie. Things went better than expected and the feeling between the two leads them into a relationship that neither of them was prepared for.

Shawn is experiencing something in his life with Marc that he has never felt before and it not only throws him off balance, but also has his concentration all a flounder when it comes to his job. It all comes to a head when Shawn goes innocently hunting and finds a toy that he can’t help but follow up on.

Marc is only trying to have a little happiness, meeting Shawn is the best thing to have happened to him for a good many years. Meeting Shawn might just also be the worst thing to have happen to him as well.

Coughing discreetly, Shawn announced his presence to the guy in the booth. The younger man turned his head, appeared to give Shawn a quick once-over, and quirked one black-lacquered fingernail in a come-hither motion.

That was all the permission Shawn needed to slip inside and close the door behind him. He stepped closer, and the dim, pulsing light from the screen flashed over the younger man’s features, revealing large kohl-rimmed eyes and plump lips. His forehead was high, his nose a little too long for his face. Shawn guessed his age as somewhere around early to mid-twenties.

The guy glanced up at Shawn as the screen flashed particularly bright and revealed eyes the color of stormy seas. He licked his lips in a slow and calculating move designed to make men speculate about what else his tongue would be useful for, then smiled with a small, beguiling upward twist of his mouth. “What took you so long?”...

Surprise element

I am a huge fan of Ms. Young’s works and after reading almost all her books, this is without a doubt, one of her best to date. There is so much more happening in this book than meets the eyes.

She throws you into the life of these men within just a few pages into the book. I was halfway through before i realised it. The personality of the men, when and when they meet, the supporting cast and the twist and turns she provide are simply fantastic

Predictability

Yes there was enough their to keep you interested – but Ms. Young caps it at just the right time with enough angst and drama to make you wish this book would never end.

Smut/Ick factor

Ohhhh yes there was there lies the crust of the problem. Marc is so pleased he has found someone he clicks with; and  Shawn just wants Marc.

Positive

FURTIVE LIAISON is a relatively short read, however be prepared, this book is more than what you see on the surface. It’s fast paced, it packs a punch and it delves into an area that really highlights Ms. Young’s brilliant writing style.

Nothing is new about what Marc and Shawn are getting up to. However Ms. Young has humanized the entire scenario to present two men caught in a battle of exploding chemistry, insecurity and a whole lot of mistrust.

Shawn just wants what he wants, and after the quickie becomes an overnight thing, he wants Marc for himself. Marc on the other hand is just counting his blessing to have found a good thing with Shawn - things come to a head as these things eventually do, but can these two men step back and give the other a chance to make it right, before all is lost?

The fact that this story is alot about ‘the man on the outside” is such a refreshing change – we all expect angst from relationships – but having the table turned and letting readers see the life on the other side is a great change to see.

This book also deal with self sacrifice, trust and loyalty – not just the mere facts of what would you do if? – The “if” did happen and that’s where the story comes into it’s own.

Negative

Not alot of Shawn’s background was given, and the fact that he was the one that set the whole house afire – it would have been nice to see a little bit more of him, to see why he was the way he is.

Ms. Young is wonderful at second books so lets see if she will revisit these two in the future, where we will get a bit more of Marc’s history.

Cover

Not one of Ms. Young’s best to date, and in some ways it actually represent what is happening in the book – but I didn’t like it..

I really liked this book, too, E.H., and can't understand why it has gotten some mixed reviews. I think Amanda did a wonderful job with it. I actually did like the cover, though. Lovely review as usual.

Hey Shawn,

I really liked this book, I have seen some of the press it received, that was one of the reason I got this one.

I agree with you - she did a wonderful job with this book.

Not sure why the cover is not doing it for me - but I love the story within - so all is right in my world (LOL)
