Bloggers - BlogSpot – Follower and Backing up

I, along with many other blogger (BlogSpot) have been experiencing issues with the blogs they follow or the people that follow them recently. To say that i am annoyed  is putting it mildly – as it has taken me months to set up my reader (Google) with all  the blogs i check on daily and the setting was just right for quick access and at my finger tip service.

I am now having to start all over again – plus visiting all the blogs, i do follow and setting up the whole thing again – I am mightily put out.

Anyhow, I am not going to dwell on it – i have sorted it and all is well with my world again, however in light of this incident, a few question jump into my mind and i would like all your input here.

  • Do you back up your blog – entire content – Where ?
  • Do you back up only the post and treat the widgets as peripherals' and can be sorted as and when?
  • Do you back up at all – if not – why not?
  • Is it worth it to back up – other than this – any other horror stories out there?
  • Lastly – Has there been any word from Google on the matter?

My Answer.

Hell yes – I back up – the whole shebang – widget, post , comment  - the whole lot.

I started backing up only post – then thought – I have invested too much time and effort in my blog to loose it all – so i went the whole nine yard.

It’s definately worth it for me – and i have not had any horror stories – but read enough on the web to know that – back up – back up – back up.

Other than sending Google an email myself letting them know my problem – no –one has actually gotten back to me and i have not found anything on the net to explain why this is happening…..

OK guys here’s your chance – let me know if any the the above applies to you.

P.S . For all the blog i have been following – I have gone through and re-activated the whole lot – at least as much as i can remember.

I have all my posts exported onto a document. I have all my widget codes save in a MS document. I bookmark all my favorite blogs so I remember them all.

Hey Phoebe -

Thanks for weighing in so early. I do all the above and more - however i have never been a big fan of bookmarking - i may now have to star being a bit more diligent in regards to that.

one question - As you have everything on your desktop, hard drive - if your blog went down - where would you start blogging again - if you decide to blog again.

Hi E.H. Great post. I think a lot of people have been having trouble. One blogger told me she had 60 people drop off overnight! I lost a couple too. I think Google merged with somebody...fireburner? something like that and everything has gone crazy. I didn't know you could back up your blog. I'm going to have to look in to that because you are right, we put so much work in to them, it would be terrible to lose it all.
Thanks for posting this! I always love to visit you :)

Hey Girl..... as always lovely to have you here.

Yeah i realize that not a lot of people actually back up - but from early IT classes you learn - back up - back up - so why not extent it to this as well.

I have gotten so paranoid about it - if I loose everything, I could probably be up again in a couple hours.

That's so bloody paranoid - but hey that's me .

interesting topic E.H. I'm gonna have to put my 2 cents in here...

This is one of the main reasons why I didn't choose to go with blogger when I started my blog. So I went with wordpress instead... yes they are more restricted and their choices of "themes/layouts" absolutely suck, but I'd rather be a bit restricted with a sucky background (at least I was able to customize my own blog banner) then lose everything I've worked so hard on...

As far as wordpress goes... I haven't heard any problems with losing things... I hope not...

and I don't back up anything because I have a very bad likes to crash computer and I don't wanna end up backing up everything on my hardrive then lose it all :\

Uhhhh...sort of confused. What's the problem with Blogger? I've used several types of blogs and Blogger works best for me. I haven't been experiencing any issues. That said, I don't use GR. I think it's horrid. I use FeedDemon. Totally rocks!

Hmm how do I back up my blog - it would be sensible...

Hey J Kaye...

There's been a problem with the followers of blogs or the blogs you follow - like myself - I follow about 60 + blogs - all the links just disappear from my Google reader - also the follow me widget on the blog I am follow - my avatar goes missing as well.

So in light of that, I thought - what if the entire blog post goes missing one morning you log in - which has been known to happen.

What would you do?

Erotic Horizon on 26 February 2009 at 18:59 said...

Hey Jodie -

There are different ways to do this - as Phoebe mention she backs up all the post on her MS document - I'll get her to come back and explain this.

Myself, i use Windows live Writer to upload post to all my blog - so all my post is saved onto my hard drive and i back up on a external hard drive - I never use the post section on blogger.

Widgets - i backup all Html code as MS document.

You can export the entire post (only) onto your desktop - obviously you have to update probably weekly or every two day ... That really easy actually.

Yeah Dani,

We have had a chat about this already and I know what you mean about WordPress being restrictive - however I have never heard of a WordPress account looking their post.

So sometime the lesser of the two evils is better.

Oh, it's a wonder if sort of thing. Well, I haven't really given it much thought. Sure it could happen, but this isn't my life's work. I mean, when you have a manuscript disappear, that's a big deal. And yes, that's happened to me.

I never thought I'd be blogging for this long. It's amazing the lengths I'll go through not to complete a story. ;)

My reviews are posted on Amazon and that's about all the back-up I have. The rest is just fluffy filling. Come to think about it. I guess you could say the same about my reviews!

Erotic Horizon on 26 February 2009 at 19:36 said...

Ahhh J Kaye.

Yeah, I get you with that point - i never thought I would be blogging this long as well.....

But if I put time and effort into something - I kinda would be really miff if the whole thing just went belly up even if I do have the reviews back up elsewhere.

Hope you feel better soon.

My issue with this actually started days ago. They are merging with friend connect and supposedly it's supposed to make following a blog easier. I say, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

If you look on Blogger Buzz they go into a bit more detail about it. I thought I had "lost" all my blogs but in reality they were still there just marked as annonymous. Eventually all will be converted back to public...just a little FYI ;)

Hey Barbara, welcome.

I can see that the widget has changes since last night -

but i couldn't agree with you more - why mess with a good thing.

Erotic Horizon on 26 February 2009 at 19:55 said...

Hope so, but i am good about the blog -

Do you back up your post and any suggestion - were all throwing stuff out here.

Great topic!

A few days ago I saw something, somewhere that Blogger was going to improve the Blog Follow app. That's when I noticed that I had lost followers! Blogger felt this would not be a problem because everyone would be notified. Oh, really??

I'm glad you mentioned backup because I assumed Blogger would always have the record. How naive.

Anyway, it's good to see you are following me again. And I have added my name to your site - again.

This new Blogger setup is also a bit confusing to use or maybe it's my aging brain that's at fault.

No, I don't back anything up and it's probably a HUGE mistake! I really need to start figuring out a way to back up my posts :-/

Erotic Horizon on 27 February 2009 at 08:23 said...

Hey Patricia,

I don't think it's naive - it just we all take it for granted that what we put on the web, will always be there until we hear the first horror story.

Do have a look at backing up - as while we can always start again - it not worth it to lose everything - if we knew we could have backed up.

Erotic Horizon on 27 February 2009 at 08:24 said...

Now that the seed has been planted - let us know when you decide - how you back up.

Chris on 28 February 2009 at 00:09 said...

Gah! Blogger just lost my epic comment with a "this action has already been performed error." Hmph.

My blog's WordPress, but self-hosted, so I can use plugins. I back everything up (layout/theme, pictures, comments, posts, etc) every week using WordPress Backup. I must say that it takes quite a bit longer to do this than when I started the blog three years ago!

Erotic Horizon on 28 February 2009 at 00:18 said...

Hey Chris,

Thanks for pitching in - I too back up on WordPress and I try to do it every two days.

It's relatively easy - but as you say, time consuming. But better than losing everything - I notice you have a few blogs going - so that's a lot of time and effort invested.

In highlighting this point, I hope more bloggers take on board the fact that they need to back up their work.

Thanks for supporting what we always knew - back up, back up, back up
